Akufo-Addo's Prayer

THE FLAGBEARER of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Addo Dunkwa Akufo-Addo, has emphasised that it has always been his prayer that God would help him to win the 2012 general elections to enable him to continue the good works of former President John Agyekum Kufour.

According to him, the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) government had brought hardship on Ghanaians and only the NPP, which had Ghanaians at heart, could address it.

Nana Addo made the statement at Anomabo in the Mfantseman West District of the Central Region on Wednesday as part of his 10-day listening campaign tour to the region.

He expressed concern about the way the fishing industry was collapsing under the leadership of President John Atta Mills who claimed to be a fisherman, adding that the NPP had a lot of plans for the fishing communities. He therefore appealed to them to vote for him to accomplish those plans.

He indicated that the NPP established the Ministry of Fisheries to ensure that the problems of fishermen were channeled directly to the ministry to ensure effective redress.

Nana Addo disclosed that plans were underway for the party to set up a taskforce that would go round the fishing communities to gather information about the difficulties confronting the industry. He said this would enable the party to address the problems when it got the nod in the 2012 elections.

The flagbearer insisted that children in the country would enjoy free education to the Senior High School (SHS) level when elected president of Ghana.

“NPP has highly learned professionals who have sat down and analyzed the free educational system and I promise you that we will definitely do it when we come to power. America and other big countries have achieved a lot through the free educational system, wherever a rich person’s child can go, a poor man’s child can also go,” he stated.

The Paramount Chief of Anomabo Traditional Area, Kantamanto Amonoo XI, revealed that former President Kufour did a lot for the people of the area, charging supporters to put their differences behind and work hard to win the upcoming general elections.

Nana Addo later visited some fishermen at Anomabo beach where they pleaded with him to ensure free flow of premix fuel, when elected, to boost their activities,

The fishermen further appealed to Nana Addo to ensure the use of the light in fishing since its banning would cause a lot of harm in their lives.

Nana Addo earlier visited Mankessim, Saltpond, Abandze and Biriwa where he interacted with some market women and other people.

Thousands of supporters, amidst drumming and dancing, took to the street chanting victory songs to welcome their brave flagbearer.

Some of the party gurus who accompanied the NPP flagbearer included former District Chief Executives (DCEs), Members of Parliament (MPs), regional, constituencies and national executives.

Dr. Bawumia Storms Tamale

news

Dr. Bawumia Storms Tamale

The main opposition New Patriotic Party has adopted different campaign strategies in the Northern Region to boost its electoral fortune come the 2012 general elections.

While some national executives of the party are building the capacities of the Parliamentary candidates through a week long workshop, Dr. Mahamud Bawumia, the 2008 NPP flag bearer’s running mate is meeting with various youth groups in the Tamale metropolis.

Dr. Bawumia who has been tipped by majority of NPP members in the Northern Region to partner Nana Akufo Addo in the upcoming 2012 general elections is making the rounds with Anthony Abayifa Karbo, the National Youth Organizer of the party.

Interacting with NPP youth at a popular base called information in Tamale, Dr. Mahamud Bawumia encouraged party members to have confidence in Nana Akufo Addo’s pledge to transform Ghana to meet her middle income status.

Dr. Bawumia who is currently an economic consultant to Zimbabwe tasked the youth to replicate Nana Addo’s listening campaign in their communities by moving from house to house to convince electorates to vote for the party in 2012.

After visiting some of the youth camps including Bakery and Kandaha, Dr. Bawumia and Anthony Abayifa Karbo accompanied by the NPP Regional Youth Organizer, Alhaji Rashid Salifu COP took a walk on some principal streets in Tamale.

The walk offered Dr. Bawumia the opportunity to interact with a few residents who expressed their delight in meeting face to face with the former Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana.

Majority of NPP supporters emphasized the need for Nana Addo to retain Dr. Bawumia as his running mate for the 2012 elections.

In their opinion, any attempt to substitute him might create more confusion in the NPP that is likely to affect its electoral success in 2012.

Whereas Asare Otchere Darko, Chief Executive Officer of the Danquah Institute is moving from one radio station to the other in Tamale marketing Nana Akufo Addo, the Deputy National Organizer, John Krugu on the other hand is whipping party loyalists to march the NDC boot for boot in the Northern Region.

Chieftaincy Reform

opinion

Chieftaincy Reform

{sidebar id=10 align=right}Following up on the article by Dr. George Oteng Attakora, “Ghaddafi and the Chiefs”, I think the debate has to be escalated so that something gets done. We

need reform, Chieftaincy reform and constitutional amendment to bring the Chiefs under the one umbrella of the Constitution. At present the constitution gives Chiefs a free ride under the guise of our multi-variant custom and traditional laws; traditions which are not monolithic across the country and cannot by any stretch of the imagination, be fair. Some of them ran blatantly opposite modern understanding, logic and I dare say common sense.

Imagine the tradition that allows Chiefs to marry underage girls or take them as “stool servants” for the rest of their lives.” We prosecute ordinary citizens who interfere with underage children, why should the Chiefs enjoy protection of such crimes in the guise of tradition under the constitution, (article 11 and 270), Why should a man be forced to marry other women because he is enstooled and needs “stool wives” as demanded by some traditions.

As the author of “Ghaddafi and the Chiefs” rightly illustrated, the essence of our Chiefs has outlived its usefulness in post modern Ghana. The institution of Chieftaincy needs reform if it should survive, and this has nothing to do with not keeping our identity as a people as some commentators have argued.

Chiefs are by tradition enstooled to be worshipped, served, kowtowed and live in palaces as “endangered species”. With some of the traditions, they even have to be bathed and clothed by a third party. In post modern Ghana, I don’t know what moral, economic or even spiritual aspect of life that this imposing lifestyle addresses.

Culture and traditions are not absolute in their own rights; they are ways of life experienced by our ancestors and passed on from generation to generation. Some of them are based on superstition, some dictated by the environment of ancient times, some based on ignorance, some by dictatorship and many more by mere belief. Of course, others are tried and tested, wise, spiritually sound and morally prudent. Culture is not static. It changes over time. As we become more knowledgeable about our environment, about who we are as a people, we should not be averse to adapting our way of life to reflect our time. This is the digital age. Eras in the Bible moved from the Judges, to the Kingss, the Prophets and to self government; with the understanding that, we are created in the image of the Creator. We live in the Creator and the Creator in us. We are all endowed with equal rights, intelligence and invention or creation potentials to reflect the Creator’s powers. We should then remove from our culture those elements that hold us captive and backward to include those that will enhance our future and develop us as people. To this end, the Constitution should be our compass and the tool for the country.

This idea of Chieftaincy and Lordship has become so entrenched in our society that most people in positions of power behave like chiefs. Directors want to take advantage office stuff, using them in some cases to ran personal errands. Why, because he is the boss, the chief. Instead of Ministers serving in their positions, they want to be worshipped. Even the Presidency sometimes gets mixed up with Chieftaincy, that’s why some Presidents want to stay on for life. We as a society have been subliminally influenced by this sense of entitlement and superiority which, I believe has its roots from our culture of Chieftaincy. Our work ethics are misplaced; this something for nothing attitude.

Chieftaincy has to be brought into the modern fold and under the constitution if it is to survive. Preserve the Kingship process to one which renders honor and accountability as an example to the people at the grass roots. Chiefs should serve, defend the constitution and promote human rights, democracy, education and nation building. They should hold accountable local government and government ministers as they are accountable by example and not consume state resources for their opulence lifestyle.

The 1992 Constitution did a terrible job by removing all government oversight from its jurisdiction and not capturing the terms of Chieftaincy into law. After all we should all be governed by one rule of law, which is the Constitution. The law should be no respecter of persons. That is why I believe we need a referendum and the legislature should seek redress to amend the constitution. I STAND WITH THE AUTHOR OF “GHADDAFI AND THE CHIEFS”, WE NO GO SIT DOWN!

Dr Anane Pounds ‘Fufu’

Dr Anane Pounds ‘Fufu’

The Nhyiaeso Constituency in Kumasi came alive last Sunday when the Member of Parliament (MP) of the area, Dr. Richard Anane commenced a house-to-house tour.

Residents of the area were excited to hear that the hard working MP grabbed a pestle and pounded an old lady’s ‘fufu’ for her at South Suntreso last Sunday.

Immediately Dr. Anane and his entourage entered the lady’s house, the MP realized that the woman was looking for someone to pound the ‘fufu’ for her so he quickly got hold of the pestle.

All attempts by the lady and the people around to stop the MP from pounding the ‘fufu’ proved futile as he continued to pound the ‘fufu’ until the cassava and plantain got finished.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) MP told DAILY GUIDE on Monday that the purpose of the tour is to give him the opportunity to meet the electorate in a face-to-face situation.

He noted that this would also enable him to know their problems and concerns so that he could formulate the right policies and programmes to address them amicably.

The meticulous legislator said he would use the tour to communicate the policies and programs of the NPP to the electorate.

Dr. Anane noted that the listening tour would help him to retain the seat by securing many votes which would eventually help the NPP to unseat the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the 2012 polls.

The NPP flagbearer, Nana Addo Danquah Akufo-Addo is currently on a similar listening tour of the country aimed at helping him understand better the problems of the electorate so that he could address them.

The MP’s version of the ‘listening tour’ started on Sunday with Dr. Anane and his aides including NPP executives in the constituency moving from one house to the other..

Dr. Anane, who interacted with whoever crossed his path, promised to start the tour whenever Parliament was on recess till the Election Day.

Explaining further, the MP said the constituents complained of lack of money in their pockets, jobs and extreme hardship since the NDC took over power in 2009.

Dr. Anane said now that Ghanaians have tested both the NPP and NDC, they would be in the better position to elect the suitable candidate, Nana Akufo Addo as president come 2012.

The MP prayed for peace among his party people members of the NPP should unite as one people with a single destiny to confront the NDC.

He also urged Ghanaians to unite and work to make Ghana a better place, stressing that without peace there would never be development.
