Osahene Boakye Djan, Former Spokesman of the defunct Armed Forces Revolutionary Council (AFRC), on Friday pledged to dedicate the rest of his life to help secure improved living standards for Ghanaians under the Better Ghana Agenda.

CPP is just using Samia – Sekou Nkrumah

CPP is just using Samia – Sekou Nkrumah

Son of Ghana’s first president, Dr. Sekou Nkrumah is worried that the Convention People’s Party [CPP] is only “using” his sister, Samia who was recently elected Chairperson of the party to create a false impression of a revival in the CPP.

Speaking on Adom TV’s BADWAM program on Multi TV, Sekou Nkrumah said his sister has a huge task ahead of her since the party she now chairs wants everyone to believe that it has been revived.

Members of the CPP after their recent congress in Accra which saw the election of Samia and other national executives into office have been proclaiming a rebirth of the party most people consider dead. And Sekou Nkrumah thinks the picture being painted of s new CPP is inaccurate.

“CPP is using Samia Nkrumah to represent the revival of the party which is not the case on the grounds. Is there really a revival?” he asked.

According to him, calls for an alternative political party besides the ruling NDC and the main opposition NPP to serve as a third political force does not make the CPP is that alternative party.

“Almost everyone is calling for a third force in our political system and yet it’s not clear why we need a third force. If the people of Ghana are tired of the NDC and NPP the third force should not necessarily be the CPP” he argued.

Dr. Nkrumah who was speaking via telephone on the program said the CPP since 1992 has been struggling to find its level in Ghana’s contemporary politics. He attributed the party’s struggles to the formation of the NDC which he said has over the years captured seats that traditionally belonged to the CPP thus making the NDC the new CPP.

He argued that the only way the CPP can become strong again is for it to be fused with the NDC or for the CPP to completely destroy the NDC.

“Look at what happened in 2008, CPP had all the publicity and the hype, yet the party performed poorly. We need more than the son or daughter of Kwame Nkrumah to revive the party” he opined.

According to him, Kwame Nkrumah was a very unique leader who had a very exceptional personality thus for anyone to step in his shoes, ‘you must have that drive’.

“I’m not seeing anybody who can step into Nkrumah’s shoes in Ghanaian politics. What I see most politicians do today is misuse monies and feed themselves to the detriment of the masses. Politicians today lack the ability to inspire and organise people” he argued.

“When Kwame Nkrumah was invited to come to Ghana it was not because his dad was this or that. He was invited to rule this country because the people saw leadership qualities in him. And when Nkrumah came, he did not disappoint Ghanaians. My sister will have to prove herself worthy of the position. Currently she is unable to disengage herself from her position as an MP and the Chairman of the CPP. That alone is enough for me to say that Samia is not ready to take off” he concluded.

A Muslim Can Be President - Kufuor

Conflict

Ex-President KufuorA Muslim Can Be President - Kufuor

Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has expressed intense befuddlement over alleged claims by Deputy Finance Minister Fifi Kwetey that no Muslim can ever be President of Ghana.

Mr. Kufuor told The Globe in an exclusive interview at his Airport residence in Accra on Friday evening that “I don’t know how it could get into anybody’s mind to say that a Muslim could not be the President of Ghana. It’s a democracy; it’s a secular nation which practices freedom of religion, perhaps we may even have a president who is not religious at all. ”

Mr. Kufuor who served two consecutive four-year terms as President was sharing, exclusively with The Globe, his opinions about the recent furore on the possibility of a Muslim ever becoming the president of Ghana amongst other things.

The issue became topical recently following a Wikileaks exposé that quoted Mr. Kwetey as asserting firmly that religion plays an important part in Ghanaian politics and that there was no way a Muslim could ever be voted into office as President in a country that is largely Christian.

He was quoted by the leaked US Diplomatic cables as having said that “Concerning Vice President [Aliu] Mahama's Muslim faith, religion is an important factor in Ghanaian politics and many Christian Ghanaians would never vote for a Muslim presidential candidate. ”

The cables also claim Mr. Kwetey said that “While most Ghanaians would not admit this openly, a Muslim could not be elected President of Ghana”, he was quoted as declaring boldly to some foreign diplomats.

No Muslim has in the annals of Ghana ever been President. Though former President Dr Hilla Limann was from the Muslim-populated Northern zone of the country, specifically Gwollu near Tumu in the Upper West region, he was never a Muslim.

Besides former President Rawlings who chose purely Southern Christian running mates for the 1992 and 1996 elections, all other presidential candidates since the 2000 elections have chosen running mates who were either purely Northern Muslims or Northern Christians to balance the religious divide and to also, principally attract votes from that part of the country which is Muslim-dominated.

The trend continued in 2004. Former President Kufuor maintained his partner Aliu Mahama while then candidate Mills chose, then MP for Kumbungu Alhaji Mohammed Mumuni; a Muslim as his running mate.

NPP’s Nana Akufo-Addo also opted for a Muslim, Dr. Mahamud Bawumia as his running mate for the 2008 elections, ostensibly, to amongst other things, strategically sway more northern and Muslim voters into the NPP.

This trend, though seen by some as a healthy development has also generated some resentment amongst some political pundits who believe that if a Muslim is good enough to become the vice president, why not the president?

Fifi Kwetey’s alleged comments therefore stirred an instantaneous condemnation from a cross section of Ghanaians who accused him of discriminating against Muslims.

Former President Kufuor expressed shock at Mr Kwetey’s alleged assertion to the diplomats and The Globe that he was utterly astounded that somebody could condescend to thinking that a Muslim could never become the president of Ghana.

According to him, religion has no role to play in the choice of who becomes the president of Ghana because the nation is governed by a secular constitution.

“…Presidency by constitution is the preserve of citizens. Fortunately our Constitution is a secular constitution. It also prescribes freedom of religion. I’m a Christian, I am a citizen; I became president not because I am a Christian but because I am a citizen of Ghana and my fellow citizens elected me. If tomorrow, (incidentally my vice president was a Muslim) a party should throw up a Muslim as its candidate and he is a Muslim that the people of Ghana would accept, what stops him from becoming the president of Ghana? ...perhaps we may even have a president who is not religious at all.”

Mr Kwetey himself has denied the allegation, explaining that he was misquoted.

In a statement released on September 13, the deputy Finance Minister indicated that his comments were meant to bring to the fore what he called the deceit and sidelining of Muslims and people of Northern decent from the political limelight, by the NPP through regional and religious tokenism.

Dr Ziblim: Ghana needs transformational leaders

A Senior Political Science lecturer at the University of Ghana, Ziblim Iddi, has advised Ghanaians to vote wisely in the 2012 general elections to ensure that the nation gets transformational leaders who can implement bold policies to enhance their living conditions.

Dr Ziblim believes Ghana, as well as the rest of the African continent, still finds itself in the quagmire of poverty and deprivation as a result of incompetent and dishonest political leadership being provided by people into whose hands the electorates have been voting to entrust their destinies.

According to the senior lecturer, African would forever remain underdeveloped so long as the elite class, as well as weak and myopic minds in pursuit of their selfish interest, continues to hijack power to exploit the suffering masses.

“We need transformational leaders who can inspire hope and have dreams to make our lives better. We have had those leaders before and we can have one if we vote wisely,” Dr Ziblim said.

This was contained in an exposition he made during the launch of the book, “Africa, a Pawn in International Power Politics”, at a ceremony in Accra last Thursday.

Proceeds from the sale of the book, authored by Dr Simpe Sasu Baffour Awuah, a lecturer at the Presbyterian University College, are to be used to provide a modern library for the university.

Touching on the political discourse on radio, Dr Ziblim regretted that the political intolerance displayed on radio had heightened unnecessary tension in the country. He therefore urged the two main political parties to call their various commentators to order to prevent chaos in the country. Quoting William Shakespeare he said, “Unsavory language and sounds of fury signify nothing.”

Dr Ziblim chastised political parties in Africa and for that matter Ghana for relying too heavily on the Briton Woods institutions to the detriment of the ideologies upon which the people vote for them, adding that their ideologies are mere vote gathering machines which are thrown away immediately power is won.

“The NDC for instance claim to be social democrats but they have not pursued any social agenda aggressively to alleviate the suffering on the masses. They have not created opportunities for people to get jobs, thus not meeting the expectation of the people who voted for them,” he stressed.

President of the Presbyterian University Collage, Prof K Sraku Lartey, said the widely held view that private tertiary institutions are causing problems is not true since most of the troubles that occur in those institutions also occur in public universities.

He was particularly happy that proceeds from the book would be used to build a modern library for the university at Abetifi in the Eastern Region and called for further support from individuals and organizations to support the university.

The book was launched by Rev Hurbert Anim Oppong on behalf of the Moderator of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana. The first copy was sold for GH¢1,000.

Dr Bawumia to partner Nana Addo?

Dr Bawumia to partner Nana Addo?

The New Patriotic Party's running mate for the 2008 elections has begun what seems to be a campaign to rally support to get selected as Nana Akufo-Addo's running mate for a second time.

Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia has been on a tour of selected areas in the Northern region including his hometown Walewale which rejected the NPP in the last general elections.

Key party members who accompanied him will not confirm or deny to Joy News his intention was to campaign for the position but say Dr. Bawumia is only using his trips to engage with party faithful, especially the youth.

National youth organizer of the NPP Anthony Karbo who was on the tour told Joy News the response is shocking.

The party is determined to win back all the seats that we have lost, encouraging people to see the difference between the two parties and make a choice. So Dr [Bawumia] has only been encouraging the foot soldiers, the youth of the party to have a lot confidence in Nana Akufo-Addo, the flagbearer of the party.
