Eastern Regional Minister to contest Akyem Swedru seat
Eastern Regional Minister, Dr. Akyem Appea-Kubi says the NDC government has made so much impact in Akyem and that many hearts have been won for the party.
He believes the good works of the NDC will change the voting pattern in the area and fetch more votes for the ruling party.
The Regional Minister was speaking to Joy News after picking his nomination form to contest primary for the Akyem Swedru Constituency. This is Dr. Appea-Kubi’s third time attempt at the Akyem Swedru seat. He failed in the last two attempts.
The Regional Minister sounded so optimistic that he declared 2012 as his year.
He believes he will be lucky in his third attempt, just like Prof. John Evans Atta-Mills, who won the 2008 Presidential election on his third attempt. He said a lot has changed in Akyem and that will work to the party’s advantage. The opposition New Patriotic Party has dominated Akyem and holds most of the 14 seats in the area.
But the Regional Minister believes the NDC government has done so much in the area and the people of Akyem have seen the difference. “A lot of things have changed. People have seen what the NDC government has done for this nation over a short period of time. When we went round to inspect projects in Akyem Swedru, all the Chiefs in the Constituency were there and they attested to the fact that the NDC government within a short period has done a lot”, he said.
The NPP Member of Parliament for Akyem Swedru, Joseph Bosompem who defeated Dr. Appea-Kubi in 2008, lost the NPP primary recently and his supporters are not happy. This has brought cracks within the NPP in the area. And the Regional Minister believes if he gets the nod to lead the NDC for the third time he would win. “That is going to be to my advantage. There’s no doubt that with a lot of hard work and with the work that we are doing now the eight thousand votes, we shall be able to over that and even get a lot more votes that before", he added.
So far Dr. Akyem Appea-Kubi is the only person who picked up the nomination form from the Constituency, even though there are signs that others might contest as well.

Avoid Politics Of Insult - Vice President Mahama
Vice President John Dramani Mahama on Saturday said a culture of insults and insolence wascreeping into the Ghanaian society as the 2012 elections draw closer.
He said nations have been torn apart as a result of this canker and that care must be taken not to inflame passions and set the clock of progress in the country's democratic dispensation backward.
Vice President Mahama stated this in a keynote read on his behalf by Mr.Paul Evans Aidoo, Western Regional Minister, at the a grand durbar to climax the Anluwae Kundum festival of the Chiefs and people of the Lower Dixcove Traditional Area at Dixcove.
He urged traditional authorities as custodians of the country's rich culture to come out to condemn remarks that would disturb the peace of the country.
Vice-President Mahama raised concern about the numerous chieftaincy disputes which have become a bane of the country's development and the Chieftaincy institution itself.
He said chieftaincy and land litigation are a sure recipe for stunted national development and "All too often, some Traditional rulers and kingmakers embroil entire areas in litigation to the
detriment of the entire society".
Vice-President Mahama said even when lives are not lost, scarce resources have to be wasted by the affected chiefs on legal fees. At other times, the government spend huge sums of money that
should have gone into development on security operations for the
maintenance and enforcement of peace, he said.
Vice-President Mahama said the confusion and warlike situations that are prevailing in certain parts of the country have chieftaincy as the root cause and these conflicts are brought about by selfish individuals who want to ascend to stools or skins by whatever means
possible.
He said under these circumstances, the government would definitely take appropriate steps to ensure the safety of life and property in any area associated with violent conflicts.
Vice-President Mahama called on the Traditional authorities in the area to ensure that there is common understanding and unity among the people of the traditional area in order to bring about the needed development.
He said at this crucial stage of the country's history, all human and material resources must be mobilized in the fight against underdevelopment the precursor of poverty, illiteracy, disease and
squalor.
Vice-President Mahama said there is the need for a concerted effort to improve on the situation of the people and these call for pragmatic efforts towards the education of the girl-child.
He called on the Lower Dixcove Traditional Council to collaborate with the Ahanta West District Assembly to initiate an Educational Endowment Fund for the benefit of the education of the needy in the society.
Vice-President Mahama said about 89 schools in the Western Region have been awarded on contract and most of these projects are near completion or have been completed and are in use.
Nana Kwesi Agyeman IX, Omanhene of Lower Dixcove, appealed to the Government to complete the construction of a sea defence wall in the area saying the project has come to a standstill because of lack of funds.
He also urged the Government to improve the condition of the Sankor-Cape Three Point and the Discovery-Medinya-Akwidaa roads and provide the Dixcove hospital with a blood bank.
Among the dignitaries who graced the function were Mr. Armah Kofi Buah, Deputy Minister for Energy, Mr. Acquinas Quansah, Deputy Minister for Local Government and Rural Development, Mr. Samuel Jonfiah, Member of Parliament for Ahanta West, Mr. Joseph Dofoyena,
Ahanta West District Chief Executive and Captain Anthony Cudjoe (rtd), Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Chief Executive.
Tullow Ghana donated 20 computers to the Lower Dixcove Traditional Council to promote ICT education in the area while the Ghana National Petroleum Company also donate 5,000 Cedis to the
traditional council and 2,000 Ghana Cedis and drinks towards the festival.

CEs Spray Cash At Birthday Bash
{sidebar id=10 align=right}THE DISTRICT Chief Executives (DCEs) for Sekyere East and Sekeyre Afram Plains in the Ashanti region last Sunday allegedly
sprayed cash at the birthday party of a lady activist of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) at Effiduase, capital of the Sekyere East district, DAILY GUIDE has learnt.
Solomon Agyei Mensah and Kwame Asiamah, both newly endorsed DCEs, according to information, surprised many including supporters of the ruling NDC with the manner they splurged on the young lady’s birthday celebration.
Though the two gentlemen admitted to attending the said party, they have denied the allegation that they showered GH¢50 notes on the birthday girl.
The two DCEs, who stormed the birthday celebration together in their newly-released Nissan Patrol cars, virtually painted the woman with cash as if they had won a huge jackpot, to the surprise of party activists who were present at the ceremony.
Yaw Nkrumah, a branch executive of the party at Effiduase, who spoke to DAILY GUIDE, said immediately the two DCEs appeared at the occasion, the atmosphere at the place changed completely.
According to him, the two DCEs arrived at the programme in the company of constituency executives, and allegedly took out money in GH¢50 notes which they sprayed on the lady anytime a song was played.
Though he could not tell the total amount of money that was displayed at the birthday party, which is still the talk of the town, Mr. Nkrumah noted that huge sums of money were splashed by the two DCEs at the event.
He stated that he decided to go public on the matter because he was at a loss as to why the two DCEs, who were appointed less than three months ago, got so much money to spend at such an event when they had been telling party foot-soldiers that times were really hard for them.
When contacted, Mr. Mensah denied the allegation, noting that though they attended the birthday party, neither he nor his colleague splashed money as being alleged by a branch executive of the party.
He explained that he and his colleague decided to go to the birthday party as a form of motivation to the supporters of the party who had been supporting the party over the years, in spite of the fact that the two districts were strongholds of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Mr. Agyei Mensah indicated that neither he nor his colleague knew the girl who was celebrating her birthday and that it was executives of the party in the two districts who urged them to be present at the occasion in order to raise the morale of the supporters in the two areas.
He was confident that if he continued to boost the morale of supporters at such programmes, the party’s chances of increasing its votes in the district would materialize to enable it to consolidate power.

"There Is Nothing Hidden That Will Not Be Exposed" – Okudzeto Ablakwa
{sidebar id=10 align=right}Deputy Minister of Information, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has slammed the Institute of Economic
Affairs (IEA) over the growing controversy surrounding a report culled from its (IEA)’s website, saying in their desperate effort to deny the report which has been on its website for some two years now, the IEA is only contradicting itself.
The Ghana News Agency (GNA) on August 14, 2011, sourced a report they published to the website of Ghana's premier public policy institute headlined “IEA slams NPP for abuse of incumbency in Election 2008”, criticizing the NPP for organizing a flamboyant campaign to the disadvantage of the then opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the 2008 general elections. The report makes stinging indictment on the NPP and how it flagrantly abused state resources to run a magnificent campaign in the last election (an election it lost to the then opposition NDC flagbearer John Mills).
But the IEA was quick to dissociate itself from the report, challenging its authenticity. An official from the institute reportedly told Myjoyonline.com on Monday they did not author the report but rather the report was presented to the institute to be reviewed. According to the said official, she had no idea who wrote the report and wondered where the GNA picked it from and why it chose to put it out.
Speaking to the issue on Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana show, Okudzeto Ablakwa stated that although the ruling NDC has not officially decided whether to boycott future IEA debates, he personally is “totally disgusted” about how the IEA is running away from its own report.
According to him, those calls are from individual members of the party who are sickened by the situation and have therefore asked the party to boycott all IEA related activities.
“I am totally disgusted about how IEA is running away from its own report and I am wondering what will make the IEA hurriedly apologize to the NPP party chairman and the NPP, even before they make their position known officially on whether they authored that report and if they had it on their website. Besides, we do not need the IEA to tell us about the NPP’s abuse of incumbency; it is widely known,” he said.
According to the Deputy Information Minister, “the IEA did not have to bring itself to this unnecessary controversy just to make the NPP and its chairman happy because there is nothing hidden that will not be exposed”.
