Dery, Jawula and Alhassan Haruna back Bawumia's nomination

Politics

A failed Vice-Presidential candidate of the opposition New Patriotic Party, Alhassan Haruna of Metropolitan TV has expressed disappointment that he was not chosen to partner Nana Akufo-Addo for the 2012 general elections.

Mr Alhassan, like Alhaji M.N.D Jawula and Ambrose Dery, was reported to have been shortlisted for the position but the party’s flag-bearer chose economist Dr Mahamudu Bawumia whose selection was acclaimed by the NPP’s national council on Thursday.

Mr Alhassan Haruna told Joy News he was invited by Nana Addo and told that he (Nana Addo) had decided to maintain his 2008 ticket, that is, run with Dr Bawumia.

“He indicated that he doesn’t want to make any change, and I trust his judgement… not that none of us was incapable but he felt that in the light of what is going on he will prefer somebody he is more comfortable with.”

Mr Alhassan, despite his disappointment at having not been selected declared his support for Dr Bawumia and Nana Addo, stressing “we are hundred percent behind him”.

“As for disappointment, certainly, there would be a little bit of it,” he admitted.

On his part, Ambrose Dery, Deputy Minority Leader and MP for Lawra Nandom, was thankful to those who supported him.

He told Joy News he has “no negative feelings towards,” Dr Bawumia.

Ex-Ghana FA chairman, and Lepowura M.N.D Jawula told Joy News although he is “naturally disappointed” that he was not select, he was happy Dr Bawumia, a man he calls “my younger brother” was selected.

Political Science Lecturer at the University of Ghana, Evans Aggrey Darko, maintained the re-nomination of Dr Bawumia is “not a risky venture”.

He said northern and Moslem balance is relevant in the Ghanaian politics as well as experience and competence of the candidate to help in the area of education, health and jobs.

“I was thinking that it is important if you have a product which is already known, it is not too difficult to market it, all that you need to do, perhaps this time, is to pursue much more aggressive advertisement policy and so on.”

Bawumia Runs with Nana Addo in 2012

Dr Bawumia & Nana AddoThe NPP 2008 defeated presidential forerunners are to challenge the embattled NDC candidate and the current sitting-president, Professor Evans John Fiifi Atta-Mills, for Ghana’s highest office, on 7th December this year as the elders of the main opposition overwhelmingly endorse Dr Bawumia.

Before his nomination, Nana Akomea- the NPP’s Director of Communications, had said that “Thursday’s naming would see very little objection, if any, due to the extensive consultation done by the flag-bearer.”

Mustapha Hamid told Joy News on Wednesday that Nana Addo was upbeat about the event and that he is very excited and looks forward to Thursday, 29th day of April 2012, which as JusticeGhana sees it, coincidentally, falls on Edward Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s 68th Birthday.

{sidebar id=12 align=right}According to Joy News report, Mr. Kwabena Agyepong- spokesperson to Ex-President John Agyekum Kufuor, confirmed that the decision to retain Bawumia for the 2012 encounter received unanimous acclamation.

In the words of New Statesman’s online newspaper, Nana Addo’s nomination received same endorsement from the National Council without a single dissenting view, which as it puts it “further solidifying the united front the party has forged in the aftermath of the 2008 elections.”

The Nana Addo- Mahamudu Bawumia ticket won the first round in the 2008 presidential elections with some 49 per cent of the total ballot cast but fell short of the 50% plus 1 vote, legally required to ascend to the Ghanaian presidential throne.

They eventually, crumbled, marginally, to the then NDC candidate Atta-Mills whose re-election to lead NDC for the December polls, is still shrouded with uncertainties.

The NDC’s party founder and former president of Ghana- Jerry John Rawlings, whose wife- Nana Agyeman-Konadu Rawlings, contested with President Mills in June 2011 for the NDC 2012 presidential slot but mercilessly lost with some starving 3% of the some 3000 total ballots cast, unlike in the 2008, had signalled his unavailability for Mills’ 2012 presidential campaign.

A political decision which as many commentators had observered,  might adversely affect Mills' re-election for a second term. But others see this as positive and perhaps a deflation and throwing away of Mills' political crutches.

Ex-President Rawlings recently rejected his party’s invitation to attend one of its major political rallies held on Saturday, 21 March 2012, to showcase its 2012 Greater Accra parliamentary contestants in Mantse Agbonaa, in Accra due to an alleged late invitation of the overlord.

This appears contrary to the showings of the NPP’s leadership on the same venue and for similar purpose on Saturday, 18 February 2012. Many are those who still read political bad omens and obituaries into Mills' rule.

Yet the NPP Member of Parliament for Asikuma Odoben Brakwa- Paul Collins Appiah-Ofori, the avowed anti-corruption campaigner has warned that the main opposition NPP might not sail through any electoral fortunes if the NPP Council of Elders were to reject Alhaji M.N.D Jawula for Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.

In the words of PC Appiah-Ofori, the Alhaji will attract more votes for NPP if paired with Nana Addo than the Economist and Banker- Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who he states brought little on the NPP’s electoral table in 2008.

“A running mate is someone who complements the effort of the presidential candidate...Dr. Bawumia failed to add anything to the votes of the NPP in the three northern regions,” he said.

The issue of NPP’s presidential running mate had made lot of news.

The speculations had been between: Dr. Bawumia; Alhaji Jawula and the Deputy Minority Leader- Ambrose Dery.

But the dust is now settled on Bawumia and the rest are certainly, left in the hands of history to predict.

Biometric Registration: 4 shot, 2 cutlassed, houses torched at Arugu

Biometric Registration MachineBiometric Registration: 4 shot, 2 cutlassed, houses torched at Arugu

Four people were shot while two others were hacked with machetes last Saturday at Arugu, in the West Mamprusi District, following misunderstandings over which territory the biometric registration exercise should be undertaken.

Upper East Regional Minister, Mark Woyongo who explained the situation during an interview on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show Tuesday, said the violence broke after residents of Arugu insisted that residents of Ubarugu – another community in the Talensi District –register at the polling station in Arugu instead of the one at Ubarugu.

The minister said the two sides have been at loggerheads over the territory occupied by residents of Ubarugu. He said the Arugu people claim the area belonged to them but the people of Ubaruga have always insisted on their autonomy.

The minister further explained that when officials of the Electoral Commission went to the vicinity on Saturday to commence the biometric registration exercise, the Aruga residents insisted the Ubarugu residents commute to Arugu for their registration and which they refused.

This, the minister said, led to the violent clashes between the two communities.

Six houses were burnt along with foodstuff. The minister said some residents fled to the Kassena-Nankana East District.

The injured, according to him, are receiving treatment at the hospital.

Two persons who were arrested Monday, the minister revealed, were forcibly freed from police custody by an angry crowd the same day.

Meanwhile, the Northern and Upper East Regional Security Councils have met over the issue and police have been deployed to the locality.

Mr Woyongo said security would be reinforced to ensure the smooth registration of voters in the area.

Mills government is driving Ghana into an abyss – Rawlings

Mills government is driving Ghana into an abyss– Rawlings

Former President Jerry John Rawlings says “Ghana needs a real and true awakening because the government is fast speeding the country into an abyss.

With the approach of Easter, he said Ghanaians must draw near and seek God’s guidance in “honest, unpretentious prayer of supplication.”

A statement issued by the Office of the former president Monday afternoon, quoted him as saying the ruling government was plunging into a growing darkness.

“When you find yourself in an unintended pit or hole the wise thing to do is to stop digging. It does not appear the Mills government is able to see the growing darkness around them.”

The statement was in reaction to the suspension last week of the party’s Deputy General Secretary, Kofi Adams, who also serves as the spokesperson for the former president.

Said the statement, “They have lost so much moral high ground and now one of the most truthful, forceful, logically minded personalities of integrity in the party leadership is being treated like an outcast to serve a parochial and unpatriotic interest.

“Do we need any other evidence to demonstrate that the Mills government has no intention of profiting from the truth?

“Ghana needs a real and true awakening. The government is fast speeding the country into an abyss and as Easter draws near let us seek God’s guidance in honest, unpretentious prayer of supplication.”

Politics

Nana Addo & BawumiaLatest

The 2008 running mate of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, arrives in Ghana tonight to be named the party’s vice presidential running mate for the 2012 elections.

Citifmonline.com can confirm that the former Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana will be presented to the National Council of Elders of the NPP at its meeting at the University of Ghana, Legon on Thursday.

The flagbearer of the NPP, Nana Akufo-Addo, according to our sources is bent on partnering with Dr. Bawumia “because he has been tried and tested.”

Coincidentally, the day to declare Dr. Bawumia as running mate falls on Nana Akufo-Addo’s 68th birthday – March 29, 2012.

“Yes, he’s arriving tonight and definitely it’s in connection with the running mate issue,” a close associate of Dr. Bawumia told Citifmonline.com.

“I’ll be highly surprised if the elders reject Nana Addo’s choice. From what I know, he’s the chosen one,” the source said.

Dr. Bawumia served as the representative of the African Development Bank (AfDB) in Zimbabwe and has recently been spotted at the AfDB offices in Tunisia.

Dr. Bawumia was born on October 7, 1963 in Tamale, Northern region of Ghana.
