Choice of Bawumia Is To Bring About Religious And Not Tribal Balance - Nana Akomea

Dr Bawumia & FamilyChoice of Bawumia Is To Bring About Religious And Not Tribal Balance-

Communications Director for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Akomea, has asserted that though the need for a broad regional and religious balance in the selection of who partnered Nana Addo in the December polls was taken into consideration, the main criterion was for the flagbearer to be comfortable with his running mate.

According to him, that basically influenced the choice of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as Nana Addo’s running mate.

{sidebar id=10 align=right}Presidential candidate of the NPP, on Thursday, March 29, finally put paid to speculations on his choice of a running mate when he named the Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana as his partner on the ticket of the NPP for the impending general elections this year.

Speaking on Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana programme, Nana Akomea explained that because Nana Addo was a devout Christian and an elderly person, he needed a Muslim and a more youthful person to complement him.

“This is a national ticket; it is not a tribal ticket or tribal balance. We are looking for broad regional and religious balance…One person is a Christian from the South and we wanted somebody who is a Muslim from the North; so we have a broad regional and religious balance…we are looking for balances but not tribal balances…,” Nana Akomea said.

He dismissed suggestions that Dr Bawumia was politically immature, brought nothing to the table when he was chosen in 2008 to partner Nana Addo and even failed to win the elections in his constituency, stressing that he is “a perfect balance for Nana Addo”.

“This business about him not winning in his own area, President Mills lost in his home region in 2000, 2004 but that didn’t stop the NDC from (going ahead with him)…until he won with the slimmest margin in 2008. The gentleman is a perfect balance for Nana Addo…Nana is an elderly gentleman, late sixties and he needed somebody who is a young gentleman for balance…And so if you have an elderly person as a flagbearer and a younger person as the running mate, it makes a perfect match with a youth balance. The main criterion is for the flagbearer to be comfortable with the running mate…,”he added.

EC officials flee as Central Gonja youth goes on rampage

Biometric Registration MachineEC officials flee as Central Gonja youth goes on rampage

Some irate youth on Saturday rampaged through the registration center at the T. I. Primary School at Sankpala in the Central Gonja District bringing the process to a temporal halt.

This is the second time the registration process had been interfered in the area and this time the group were protesting against the registration officials who had refused their request to register some three persons suspected to be minors.

Mr Yussif Latif Braiman, Assistant Registration Officer, said a crowd stormed the registration center trying to demolish the materials and to beat them saying “we tried saving our lives so we packed our materials and ran away”.

He said the registration center was located in the heart of the town and as a result, “there was always mounting pressure on them emanating from the community members who subsequently brought three minors to be registered and when they were denied registration, the community members decided to halt the process and refused to allow further registration”.

Mr Braiman said two ladies who are natives of Kusawgu, but residents in Tamale, came to be registered but the community members would also not allow them to register leading to the closure of the registration exercise at about 14:00 GMT.

Miss Rashida Iddrisah, one of the ladies, said although they were not from the town, they were Ghanaians and thus could register in any part of the country.

She said some of the community members who said they were party agents harassed them and insisted that they would not allow them to be registered.

At the time of filing this report, the Northern Regional Police Commander George Tuffour had deployed some police personnel to the area to restore law and order.

NPP Unveils Campaign Programme In Germany

NPP Unveils Campaign Programme In Germany

THE REGIONAL chapter of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the German State of North Rhein Westphalia (NRW) has launched its campaign programme for the 2012 elections the first of which is scheduled to take place today in Dortmund.

{sidebar id=12 align=right}The programme code-named “Recapture Power and Rebuild Ghana” is aimed at mobilizing the Ghanaian Diaspora in Germany to rally behind the NPP to ensure victory in the December 7 polls and help rebuild Ghana.

Kwadwo Kagya-Agemang, Regional chairman of the party made this known at a meeting with party supporters and sympathisers in Düsseldorf.

He said the programme will be held in all major towns and cities in the state to enable the party explain its policies and programmes to Ghanaians resident in Germany.

He noted that the 2012 elections will mark an important turning point in the nation’s history because it will determine whether the country can move towards the realization of its development goals or continue to retrogress under the failed and discredited government of the NDC.

Mr Kagya-Agyemang who returned from Ghana just a week ago told the gathering the increase in food prices, utility bills and exorbitant school fees had led to disillusionment and apprehension among all sections of the Ghanaian populace, a situation he maintains is unacceptable and needs to be changed.

On his part, Kwaku Anane-Gyinde, Director of Communications-NPP Germany expressed regret that the NDC has turned politics into a contest of insults rather than a contest of ideas adding that it has not only become fashionable but also profitable because such reprehensible conduct is always rewarded by the Mills-Mahama administration.

He assured Ghanaians that the NPP will focus on relevant and important issues that matter to the ordinary Ghanaian. These he said include job creation, free secondary education, provision of affordable housing, the modernization of the economy and empowering people to create and manage their own businesses.

According to him, Nana Akufo-Addo represents hope and a new vision for Ghana and has demonstrated this through his personal achievements as a distinguished lawyer, a successful businessman, and exceptional diplomat, an honest politician and above all a responsible father who did not shirk his parental responsibilities.

Mr Anane-Gyinde stated that Nana Akufo-Addo will bring back respect and restore dignity to the Presidency through leadership by example adding that the numerous massive corruption scandals in which President Mills has been an active participant and culpable accomplice will not be tolerated under an Akufo-Addo presidency.

On the recent media blacklisting in Ghana, Mr Anane-Gyinde accused the current administration of human rights violations including hindering press freedom.

Nana Addo Is A Political Hawk...Bawumia Is A Dove - NDC

Nana Addo & Dr BawumiaNana Addo Is A Political Hawk...Bawumia Is A Dove- NDC

Ever since flagbearer of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) Nana Akufo-Addo selected Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as his running mate, many have been the comments passed by various government spokespersons on the issue.

In all these comments, one thing stands out quite clearly, that the electoral fortunes of the NPP will not in any way be changed despite Dr Bawumia’s selection, insists government's communicators.

The latest to speak on the issue is the Deputy Coordinator of Communications for the National Youth Employment Programme [NYEP], Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, who posits that the NPP will again be defeated in the December polls because its flagbearer has positioned himself as a “political hawk”.

{sidebar id=10 align=right}According to him, Nana Addo deliberately chose the former Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana because he wanted someone who would kowtow to him and not voice out any dissent to his orders.

“...when the term hawk is loosely used, it refers to a small to medium-size woodland bird that watches their prey from a concealed perch, swoops down and snatches it up...The prey doesn't recognize the danger until it's too late….Nana Addo preferred someone who will kowtow to him and never challenge his orders…Bawumia is a political dove whilst Nana Addo is a hawk," he said.

According to him, Nana’s only track record has to do with demonstrations he led in the past but noted even that were not good enough to qualify his as a prospective president. A lot more people, including Kweku Baako Jnr and Kwesi Pratt have caused change through similar demonstrations; Murtala said and doubted if Nana Addo had been engaged in more street agitations than the two.

Whiles disparaging Nana Addo's conduct as an Attorney-General in the erstwhile Kufuor regime, the NYEP Dep Communications Coordinator accused him of seizing every opportunity to attack President John Evans Atta Mills and alluded to the "Doctor-Do Little" and "Visionless” comments used in describing the performance of the Mills led administration as typical examples. To him, the litany of accusations listed above plus a host of others unspoken off clearly indicates that the NPP flagbearer is a "political hawk" who could not be trusted with the destiny of the nation.
