CPP Committed To Unite With PNC – Samia
The Convention People’s Party (CPP) is looking forward to a successful merger with the People’s National Convention (PNC) ahead of the 2012 general elections.
Speaking to Citi News, the chairperson of the CPP, Samia Nkrumah, said a merger between the two parties will provide a united front for the two main Nkrumahist parties come the December polls.
“We are committed to uniting with the PNC, we knew it will take time and it is a difficult process, but that is one of our strongest objectives,” Ms. Nkrumah said. “Our goal is to have a unified Nkrumahist party, a genuine party, it is not a brand name. It is a belief in policies that can be demonstrated, implemented and lived.”
She said it is only an Nkrumahist party that can implement the ideas of Ghana’s first President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.
According to her, people who call themselves Nkrumahists cannot do so if they do not implement policies inspired by the late Dr. Nkrumah.
Referring to the exit of Dr. Paa Kwesi Nduom from the CPP, she said the PPP flagbearer’s departure was necessary to the “refinement and rebirth of the CPP.”
“It was no surprise to us that Dr. Paa Kwesi Nduom and the people he came in with would leave. That is fine, we wish them well. Those who are committed to the cause have stayed,” Ms. Nkrumah said.

PPP Lashes Out At Dr. Kpessa Whyte, Questions His Objectivity
The Progressive People’s Party (PPP) has lashed out at political analyst Dr. Michael Whyte Kpessa over comments he made that it would take a long time for Dr. Nduom’s newly formed party “to be recognized as a credible third force in Ghanaian politics”.
Dr. Kpessa who made the comments on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show Wednesday, was responding to reports that the party had named its founder, Dr. Paa Kwesi Nduom as its flag-bearer to contest the December polls.
{sidebar id=10 align=right}But a press release signed by Paa Kow Ackon, a member of the PPP Communications team accused Dr. Kpessa of lacking objectivity in his comments about the PPP since he has not missed any opportunity to write the party off.
According to the press release, “Dr. Whyte should understand that the PPP is not struggling for recognition. We are working, sacrificing and putting our faith in the Ghanaian voter. Ghanaians know us. However we are well aware that we must build credibility and on the ground popularity to win votes.”
Citing electoral victories chalked by some relatively smaller parties across the African continent, the press release questioned “how long did it take the NDC and the NPP to be recognized as credible political parties and even win power in Ghana? Also, how long did it take Yayi Boni and Michael Sata to become presidents in their own countries, Benin and Zambia? Clearly, Dr. Whyte knows quite too well that he does not have any empirical verification to shore up his claim apart from his subjective assessment of the PPP. Ghanaians cannot take him seriously.”
The release questioned the Dr. Kpessa’s “objective” indicating that “as from the day our party was announced, he has not missed any opportunity to write us off? Where is his objectivity?”
The release further described as “incongruous” the fact that the political analyst thinks “political parties do not use personalities to get themselves into the consciousness of the people. History shows that political parties have often selected their most visible personalities to be their flag-bearers…Why does Dr. Whyte want to create an impression as if the election of Dr. Papa Kwesi Nduom is a new thing in Ghana?”
The four-page press release noted that “it would be good if Dr. Whyte would move away from his comfort zone and visit the villages and towns throughout the country to verify his claim that the PPP exists only in the media. As for sitting in one’s own backyard to conjure up what will happen on December 7, nobody needs a political analyst or a prophet to do that.”
The press release concluded that the PPP is not “dispirited by Dr. Kpessa Whyte’s pre-meditated conclusion about the PPP. We will continue to speak the truth to Ghanaians and have trust in their good judgment based on their present living condition and to treat the 2012 general elections as a “Bona Vacantia” in order to vote for the right presidential and parliamentary candidates come December 7.”

Bawumia storms Northern Ghana
The New Patriotic Party’s Vice Presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia will begin his first leg tour of the northern region on April 13.
Both Dr. Bawumia and the NPP Presidential candidate, Nana Akuffo Addo are expected to storm Tamale on that day.
The tour, according to the party is to offer Dr. Bawumia the opportunity to join the people in the north to show appreciation to the NPP for retaining him as Nana Addo’s running mate.
There are doubts over Dr. Bawumia’s ability to amass votes for the NPP in the north and the visit aims at marketing him to the electorate.
The Northern Regional NPP Secretary, Dr. Clifford Braimah gave highlights of Dr. Bawumia’s scheduled visit.
“We have an official programme for the visit of the running mate and the flagbearer who are both coming together on April 13; when they get into town we will have a procession through the principal streets in Tamale and later in the afternoon we will drive to Nalerigu to present the running mate to Nayiri for his blessing.”
He disclosed, “On April 14 at the Tamale Jubilee Park we are going to have a national Muslim prayer where all the denomination of the Muslim sects will be around for us to recite the Qur’an to pray for peaceful registration, elections and also transition.”

PPP not yet a credible third force in Ghanaian politics: Kpessa Whyte
Political analyst, Dr. Kpessa Whyte says it would take the Progressive People’s Party (PPP) a long time to be recognized as a credible third force in Ghanaian politics.
He said the PPP is struggling for recognition alongside the two dominant political parties - the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) - that have dominated Ghana’s political scene for years. But he stated “it’s probably going to take them a very very long time”.
{sidebar id=10 align=right}Commenting on Dr. Paa Kwesi Nduom’s acclamation as flagbearer of the party he founded on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show Wednesday, Dr. Whyte said he did not expect otherwise. The popular acclamation was done by constituency members of the party across the country.
But the political analyst has cautioned that history has shown that it is dangerous to build political parties around individuals. "Moreover if the PPP wants to be seen as a reliable third force, then it must espouse clear ideas that make them different from the other political parties and stop focusing on the upcoming elections in December" Dr. Whyte added:
“I have heard Dr. Paa Kwesi Nduom talk about change and not change of the same kind but I haven’t heard any substantive policy in terms…of how differently they will deal with (issues)…” and how those policies will be implemented. “This is the only way I believe Ghanaians will begin to take them serious,” Dr. Whyte insisted.
Admitting that the country impatiently expects some positive transformation in the political arena, Dr. Whyte said he doubts Ghanaians would settle for just any party. “I think that Ghanaians are beginning to be critical, they are not necessarily going to vote for a political party for change just for the sake of change.”
He added that the nature of Ghana’s electoral system itself – winner takes all – poses significant challenge for the PPP. He said the two big political parties would continue to dominate the scene if reforms are not made in the electoral system. Dr. Whyte urged the PPP to study the NPP and the ruling NDC to examine areas the party can capitalize on to stand out.
He suggested the party should move to rural localities, meet and interact with the people and design policies relative to their needs instead of using the media.
For him, the PPP appears more to be contesting its‘mother party’ the Convention People’s Party (CPP) and not gearing up for general elections.
