Election 2012 Is A Competition Of Ideas And Solutions - Akufo-Addo

The flagbearer of the opposition New Patriotic Party, (NPP) Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has urged Ghanaians to ensure that the 2012 election is based on the competition of ideas and solutions to the problems facing the people of Ghana.

In his May Day message to Ghanaian workers, Nana Akufo-Addo stated that NPP is committed to providing a competent, progressive leadership that will bring about the transformation of the national economy, adding that Ghanaians must refrain from acts that will seek to jeopardize the peace and stability in the country.

Below is the full statement

On the occasion of May Day, the day set aside to celebrate workers worldwide, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and I wish to extend our gratitude to all Ghanaian workers, both in the formal and informal sectors, for their hard work and patriotic contribution towards Ghana’s development over the years.

This year’s celebration comes at a time when our country is preparing one more time to go to the polls. Among the challenges facing our society today are the lack of jobs for large segments of our people, high cost of living, high cost of doing business, high cost of education, high cost of accommodation and lack of access to healthcare.

{sidebar id=10 align=right}These are some of the issues that must engage the attention of the Ghanaian people. Let us ensure that this election is primarily a competition of ideas and solutions to the problems facing our people. Let us make this an election the results of which will respond to the aspirations of the youth of Ghana.

The NPP is committed to providing a competent, progressive leadership that will bring about the transformation of our national economy, driven by Ghanaians for the good of Ghanaians. It is through rapid industrialization and value-addition that our economy can create the needed pool of decent jobs with decent pay across Ghana to enhance the dignity of Ghanaian labour.

The NPP is determined to forge a partnership with working people and the private sector to achieve this goal so that the concerns of labour for decent work, i.e. good jobs with good pay, strong health and safety regulations, can be satisfactorily addressed.

For us in the NPP, the security and unity of our country are crucial and we appeal humbly to each and every one of us to say and do things that will keep our politics healthy, clean, and constructive.

Maintaining law and order is key and we must all encourage those tasked to do so, to do so professionally without fear or favour. The NPP is committed to maintaining a safe and peaceful environment necessary for the progressive programmes and policies that we have for the people of Ghana. The triumph of the rule of law is what will fortify our prospects of building a prosperous, fair and just Ghanaian society.

Our message on Workers’ Day to the anxious Ghanaian workforce is this: stay faithful to the Ghanaian enterprise. There is a brighter future ahead of you. The NPP is resolute in its commitment to building a society of aspirations and opportunities for the Ghanaian people.

On this festive day for working people, we in the NPP salute you and wish you God’s blessing. We have all to remember that it is only by the hard work of all of us that we can build the Ghana of our dreams.

May God bless the Ghanaian worker

CPP Will Ensure Freedom Of Justice For All

Bright AkweteyThe Convention People’s Party (CPP) when voted to power will ensure freedom and justice for all irrespective of one’s political affiliation.

Mr Bright Akwetey, a Presidential aspirant of the CPP for the 2012 General Elections, said this on Saturday when he met the Central Region constituency executives in Cape Coast to canvas for votes in the impending primaries on May 12.

He said past governments have failed the nation in terms of socio-economic development and urged them to vote for the CPP for better governance in the December general elections.

He said the victory of CPP in December depended on their votes and asked Ghanaians to vote massively for the party.

The aspirant, who was once a State Attorney, asked them to sustain party structures and feel proud to be Nkrumaists.

Mr. Akwetey asked the executives to educate party members to refrain from violence and political insults to ensure free and peaceful elections, before, during and after the December general elections.

Ms. Araba Bentsil Enchil, former Executive Member of the party, asked members not to allow politicians to influence them with money to vote for them.

They should rather vote for honest people with sterling qualities.

2012 elections: TUC boss entreats Ghanaians to vote on great ideas

The Secretary-General of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), Mr Kofi Asamoah, has entreated all Ghanaians to vote for candidates who have great ideas about creating jobs in the upcoming elections.

He urged the citizens to focus on candidates whose ideas will improve incomes and give access to housing, education, health, electricity, water and sanitation.

The TUC boss was speaking during this year’s May Day celebrations held at Sunyani in the Brong Ahafo Region.

{sidebar id=10 align=right}He stated: “We demand of the competing parties and their presidential candidates serious debates over the main issues of our times; a clear vision of the future of Ghana and concrete policy alternatives that have the capacity to transform our economy and lift our people out of the mass poverty to a level where the average Ghanaian can identify with the middle income status of our country.”

He urged Ghanaians to exhibit maturity, fairness and transparency in the electoral process, saying it is the collective responsibility of all to ensure the peacefulness of the December polls.

Mr Kofi Asamoah said the workers of Ghana and their leadership are prepared to play their part in ensuring a violent-free election but stressed that the onus lies on government, security agencies, political parties and the Electoral Commission to maintain peace.

He pointed out again, that President John Evans Atta Mills has the “singular responsibility and honour to see Ghana through this election peacefully.”

Mr Asamoah challenged the media to exercise circumspection in their reportage and highlight the important issues that directly affect the livelihood of people on the national agenda while helping to banish the politics of trivialities.

He also called on the security agencies, especially the police and judiciary, to exhibit professionalism and eschew favoritism and bias in the discharge of their duties.

The TUC boss also advised the Electoral Commission to be faithful to their constitutional mandate and jealously guard their independence.

Bank Of Ghana Makes New Move To Save Falling Cedi

The Bank of Ghana (BoG), says, despite raising the policy rate by 100 basis points to 14.5% on April 13, 2012, it has taken new measures to stabilize the country’s currency, the cedi from falling further, a statement issued by the bank April 27, 2012 has said.

The new measures include “the re-introduction of BoG Bills, revision in the application of the statutory reserve requirement of banks and the provision of cedi cover for vostro balances”.

{sidebar id=10 align=right}The Bank said the policy rate increase was intended to improve the attractiveness of cedi assets and increase the supply of foreign exchange to the market but “speculative activity of currency traders in the inter-bank foreign exchange market continues to exert pressures on exchange rates, resulting in continuing depreciation of the Ghana cedi”. The cedi depreciated 8% against the dollar in first quarter of 2012.

The new move, which takes effect May 1, 2012, is to reinforce the monetary policy stance and restore stability and transparency in the foreign exchange market, according to the central bank.

Read full statement of the Bank of Ghana

The Bank of Ghana has observed, since the last meeting of the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) that the transactions market for foreign exchange remains broadly stable, consistent with economic fundamentals. However, speculative activity of currency traders in the inter-bank foreign exchange market continues to exert pressures on exchange rates, resulting in continuing depreciation of the Ghana cedi.

It would be recalled that the MPC increased the policy rate and reduced the limits on Net Open Position (NOP) of banks. The measures were intended to improve the attractiveness of cedi assets and increase the supply of foreign exchange to the market. The Bank further indicated that it would closely monitor developments and take additional measures if deemed necessary.

In order to reinforce the monetary policy stance and restore stability and transparency in the foreign exchange market, the Bank has decided on the following measures:

1. The re-introduction of Bank of Ghana Bills in the following tenors – 30 days, 60 days and 270 days. This is intended to support the monetary operations of Bank of Ghana and provide additional avenues for cedi investments.

2. Revision in the application of the statutory reserve requirement of banks. All banks will now be required to maintain the mandatory 9 per cent reserve requirement on domestic and foreign deposit liabilities in Ghana cedis only. Consequently, banks will no longer hold the reserves in different currencies.

3. Provision of cedi cover for vostro balances. All banks are required to provide 100 percent cedi cover for their vostro balances, to be maintained at Bank of Ghana. This is in line with the provision in the Operational Guidelines Pursuant to the Foreign Exchange Act, 2006 (Act 723) that precludes foreign investor participation in the short end of the money market. This is also consistent with the 27th March 2012 directive of Bank of Ghana to all banks.

These measures will take effect from 1st May 2012.
