NDC Has Lost Focus – Nana Akufo-Addo

NDC LogoNana Addo-Dankwa Akufo-Addo, Presidential Candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has appealed to Ghanaians to vote massively for the party in this year’s polls since the government has lost focus.

This, he said, would enable the NPP to continue with its pro-poor and social intervention programmes to alleviate the plight of Ghanaians, describing the current socio-economic situation in the country as “not encouraging”

Addressing a mammoth rally of the party in Kumasi, the Presidential Candidate bemoaned the increasing rate of unemployment amongst the youth, taxes, poverty, high utility bills, near collapse of vibrant social intervention programmes initiated by the previous government and exorbitant school fees.

{sidebar id=12 align=right}He accused the Atta Mills’ Administration of failing to address the needs of the masses, saying it had failed to deliver on its campaign promises to making life worth living for the people.

“The National Democratic Congress (NDC) had shown in its almost four-year rule that it had nothing good to offer the citizenry and has lost focus as most of its policies and programmes had aggravated the hardships confronting the people”, he said.

Nana Akufo-Addo indicated that most of the people had lost faith, trust and confidence in the government as they could not come to terms with the growing anti-poor policies by the government.

He accused the government of resorting to politics of insults, defamation of character and lies so as to cover up its incompetence and mismanagement of the economy.

“We in the NPP are aware of the diabolical moves by the government to shift focus from its failures in order to take advantage of the impending elections and I call on the electorates to resolve to reject the NDC for their own benefit.”

Nana Akufo-Addo said the NPP with its good track record had the capacity to transform the economy so as to make life more comfortable for the people.

He cited how the party brought hope to the people in its eight-year rule, saying the introduction of the Ghana School Feeding Programme, Capitation Grant, National Health Insurance Scheme, amongst other interventions, helped to enhance the socio-economic lives of the people.

He said the party would uphold rule of law, good governance and also ensure effective democratic dispensation when given the mandate.

Dr Mahammudu Bawumia, the NPP Presidential Running Mate, cautioned the youth to be wary of NDC deceit as it had no good plans for them.

“I entreat the youth to vote massively for the NPP since we have what it takes to transform the economy to bolster their living conditions.”

Sekou Joins NPP

Conflict

Sekou Joins NPP

Sekou NkrumahOne of the sons of Ghana’s first President, Sekou Nkrumah, is set to join the campaign of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) as part of his contribution to help kick out the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) from office in December 7, 2012 when Ghana goes to the polls.

Sekou believes the main opposition party cannot win the 2012 elections on a silver platter and therefore needs to involve individuals and group of persons who are not from the Danquah-Busia stock in their campaigns to attract floating voters and members of the NDC who have fallen out with the party, saying, “I think that one would give more confidence to the platform.”

{sidebar id=10 align=right}According to him, people like him who had fallen out with the Mills administration would easily appeal to the conscience of floating voters and disgruntled supporters of the NDC.

Sekou, who was removed as National Coordinator of the National Youth Council (NYC) for criticizing President Mills and his government, made the revelation during an interview with DAILY GUIDE in which he declared his readiness to join the NPP campaign.

“I think the change is possible; the NPP can win the 2012 elections but it looks as if there’s been a bit of a relaxed mode on the NPP. I think they should be a lot more aggressive on the campaign. Six months is long enough to kick-start the campaign in a very aggressive way,” he said.

Dr Nkrumah noted that “there is obviously going to be a struggle; it’s not going to be easy for the NPP but I think NPP needs to put a lot of effort in the campaign and reach out to a lot of people outside the NPP as well.”According to him, “There are many fronts and some of us; I mean the younger generation can easily be involved in the Vice President’s campaign and maybe the older folk will focus more on the Nana Addo campaign.”

Though, he claimed the NPP stood a better chance in the upcoming elections than the NDC, he said, “I think that we need to work for it because nothing comes easy” since, according to him, there were so many possibilities.

NPP presidential candidate Nana Akufo-Addo’s campaign manager, Boakye Agyarko, has welcomed Sekou and like-minded individuals and groups who want to join the party’s campaign.

Mr Agyarko told Daily Guide that they believed they would help restore hope in Ghanaians.

For now, the plain-speaking Sekou, who resigned from the ruling NDC to declare his unflinching support for the NPP and its Presidential Candidate, Nana Akufo-Addo, said the NPP had not done enough to bring some of these people other than members of their own party on board their campaign.

“Some of us are sitting on the fence, I think the NPP needs to get us all involved so that the campaign becomes much more aggressive and reach out to the wider public,” he said.

That notwithstanding, he asked the leadership of the party not to be complacent but work hard to achieve victory, considering the fact that they were dealing with a party in government which could use incumbency to its advantage.

Without Rawlings, NDC Can Still Win 2012 Election - Ben Ephson

Renowned pollster and Managing Editor of the “Daily Dispatch” newspaper, Ben Ephson Jnr, believes that even without the support of ex-president Rawlings, there is a brighter chance of President Mills scooping lots of votes in the impending general election and emerging as winner.

{sidebar id=10 align=right}According to him, even when the former president campaigned for then candidate Mills in 2000 and 2004, he (Mills) still lost. He added that it was only in 2008 that Mills’ electoral fortunes changed when he won the presidential run-off.

“So, you can’t say that without Rawlings, Mills will lose. I must say that without the Rawlingses, the NDC must work harder,” he said.

Speaking to Emefa Apawu on RadioXYZ, Ben Ephson opined that the internal wranglings in the NDC can be attributed to Mr. Rawlings suffering from “withdrawal symptoms”, adding that it has become difficult for the ex-president to accept that he is no more in power having ruled for some 19 years.

The renowned pollster urged Mr. Rawlings to consider Hon E.T Mensah’s advice to them concerning loyalty to their marriage and the party.

The former confidante of the Rawlingses is reported to have stated that “allegiance to the husband isn’t transferrable to the wife through marriage”.

Commenting on one of the key factors that accounted for Mills’ loss in 2000, Mr. Ephson said the NPP managed to delude the electorate into believing that voting for candidate Mills meant Mr. Rawlings would be the de-facto president. Taking Central region as his case study, he pointed out that President Mills won in the region in 2008 because the electorate bought into the idea that Mills will be his own man if elected as president.

“One of the reasons why Mills won in Central Region was that people believed he (Mills) would be his own man…after three years, floating voters have seen that Mills is his own man and thinks independently from the wishes of President Rawlings,” he said.

Akufo-Addo, Bawumia light up Eastern region

Akufo-Addo, Bawumia light up Eastern region

Nana Addo & Dr BawumiaThe New Patriotic Party's (NPP)presidential candidate, Nana Akufo-Addo and his running mate, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Saturday, brought commercial activities to a halt when they took the 'Hope Tour’ to the Eastern Region.

Touring the Abuakwa North constituency on their first day, Nana Addo and Dr Bawumia were mobbed by residents, traders and commercial drivers who abandoned everything to catch a glimpse of the pair that has been described by President Kufuor as “God sent”.

The tour took Nana Addo and his running mate to Anyinasin, Aboabo, Old Tafo, Osiem, New Tafo, Sokode and Kukurantumi all in the Abuakwa North constituency.

They took time to shake and interact with as many people as possible in the various communities they visited.

{sidebar id=12 align=right}Nana Addo in his address asked the people whether they’ve benefited from President Mills’ so-called unprecedented achievements to which they responded with a loud no.

He said “instead of putting money in our pockets as he promised, President Mills has rather created holes in our pockets and it is simply because of the hardships that his administration is visiting on the Ghanaian people.”

Nana Addo stressed the need for all registered voters who have been made poorer and helpless by the incompetent NDC administration to vote massively for the NPP in December to ensure that Ghana is put back on the pedestal of growth and development.

He said “we all have to vote massively to retire this incompetent NDC administration to make way for the NPP to come and make your lives better.

“I remain committed to providing free senior high school education for all our youth. I believe we cannot make that transformation if majority of our people remain illiterate.”

He said his focus will also be to expand and transform the Ghanaian economy to create and sustain jobs for the many unemployed in our country.

“If we do not make a conscious effort to reduce drastically the level of unemployment in our country, we will be building a pool of hopeless and helpless people, mainly young men and women who will be forced into acts that will haunt all of us in the end” Nana Addo noted.

The running mate to Akufo-Addo, Dr Bawumia said “the better Ghana that President Mills promised has now become a harder Ghana and the earlier the Ghanaians voted the NDC out, the better for the wellbeing of the Ghanaian people and the Ghanaian economy.

“It is obvious that President Mills and his team do not have the knowledge and expertise to manage the affairs of our country and that is why they have remained clueless for four years.”

He continued “the better Ghana has not come in three and half years and it will not come in six months, simply because they do not have the know-how and commitment to make the lives of the Ghanaian people better.”

He cautioned “if we do not vote them out now, hunger and poverty will start killing our people and that is surely not what we want for our country.”

He said Nana Akufo-Addo’s vision of creating a society of opportunities and aspirations is possible and all it requires is the right and experienced hands to do the job.

He observed “I have worked closely with him and I know he is committed to bringing about the economic transformation that will help create more decent and sustainable jobs for our people.

“I entreat all of you, to join Nana Akufo-Addo and vote massively for him and the NPP so that together we can restore hope and prosperity to our people”, Dr. Bawumia added.
