The Yutong Bus Is In The Mud - Teye Nyaunu

Michael Teye NyaunuMr Michael Teye Nyaunu, the defeated National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) Member of Parliament (MP) for the Lower Manya Constituency in the Eastern Region, has observed that his government is bereft of leadership ideas and has thus lost control and bearing.

According to the Lower Manya MP, the Atta Mills-led government of the NDC has worsened the economic situation of Ghanaians in the last three and a half years due to the massive corruption it has supervised after taking over the reins of government.

{sidebar id=12 align=right}Taking his turn to address a rally on the 33rd anniversary celebration of June 4 at Aflao last Sunday, Michael Teye Nyaunu, alias MTN, said the government has lost the battle against corruption and has failed to abide by the principles of probity, accountability and integrity: ideals with which former President Jeremiah John Rawlings founded the NDC.

Employing a question-and-answer format, Mr Nyaunu said to the crowd, “Show by hands how many of you here have been gainfully employed since the NDC came to power? Three and a half years after elections, NDC people are still holding applications looking for jobs. Monkey has worked for the baboon to chop.”

Likening the jobless situation of NDC supporters to George Orwell’s literature “Animal Farm,” Mr Nyaunu charged the supporters to ‘fight’ to enjoy the fruit of their sweat and toil.

According to him, the NDC does not have the moral grounds to accuse the New Patriotic Party of corruption, stating that corruption in the NDC, according to Mr Martin Amidu, the immediate former Attorney General, has become official.

He said, “We have a serious problem on hand, and with six months more to go into election, what are we going to say? NDC has a problem and this is a time to take a drastic action or we shall blame ourselves.

“The Yutong bus has gone off the road. It is stuck in the mud because the sleeping driver is no more given hot coffee to drink. All of us must come out of the bus and push it or we will forever remain in the mud.”

Concluding, he said, “We must all come out of the Yutong bus, push it out from the mud and put it back on the highway.”

Sale Of State Bungalows/lands...Publish List Of All Beneficiaries - NPP

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has asked the Lands Commission to publish the full list of beneficiaries of state lands and bungalows from 1982 when the erstwhile Provisional National Defence Council (PNDC) assumed the reins of power.

{sidebar id=10 align=right}That, according to the party, would set the records straight to debunk the perception that all the lands were sold during the Kufuor administration.

Reacting to a publication in the Wednesday, May 20, 2012 of the Daily Graphic, on the grabbing of government lands and bungalows, the NPP Member of Parliament (MP) for Okaikoi South and Communications Director of the party, Nana Akomea, said the story sought to create the impression that government lands were sold by the NPP government to its members.

He explained that there was a state land policy under which the government allocated lands to individuals, but in 1997, the NDC government under President Jerry John Rawlings introduced the Accra Redevelopment Plan to properly utilise government lands and bungalows which had been sitting on large tracts of land.

Consequently, he said, the Lands Commission was directed to rezone the areas for the Accra redevelopment project.

He said the redevelopment was first piloted at Cantonments, near the Togolese Embassy in Accra, where the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) pulled down about seven bungalows and replaced them with 67.

According to Nana Akomea, the policy was still in place and the government was still implementing it by selling more lands to individuals.

He alleged that the current Greater Accra Regional Chairman of the Lands Commission, Mr Oko Nikoi Dzani, also of NDK Financial Services, acquired one of the estates at Cantonments in 2011.

He gave a list of NDC members, functionaries and other Ghanaians, including President John Evans Atta Mills; Mrs Betty Mould-Iddrisu, a former Minister of Education; Professor Kofi Awoonor, the Chairman of the Council of State; Mr Peter Nanfuri, a former Inspector-General of Police (IGP); Alhaji Mohammed Mumuni, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, and Mr Martin B. K. Amidu, a former Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, who had acquired government lands and bungalows at the North Legon Residential Area, the South Legon Development Scheme and the Ofankor Residential Area from 1985 to date.

The others are the 31st December Women’s Movement, Mr Fred Ohene Kena, Mr Mark Woyongo, Mr J. H. Owusu-Acheampong, Mr Baba Kamara, Mr Vincent Asisseh, Mr Stanley Q, Barnor, Mr Justice N. S, Gbadegbe, Mr Kwame Saarah-Mensah, among others.

According to the May 20 publication, a government report revealed that public officers at the Lands Commission, the Ministry of Works and Housing and the Town and Council Planning Department designed various illegal schemes to allocate government bungalows and parcels of land to politicians, government officials and their friends without Cabinet approval and direction.

GSS Hoodwinks Ghanaians - Where is the 2010 Census Report?

Photo ReportingThe Danquah Institute (DI) observed with disappointment and pity the press conference held by the Ghana Statistical Service last week, ostensibly, to announce the 2010 Population and Housing Census Results to the Ghanaian people.

What transpired that day was shameful and an insult to the intelligence of the people of Ghana. To our dismay, no census report, per se, was presented to Ghanaians by the GSS. What was on show was a PowerPoint presentation of just a few headline data, similar to what was presented in the provisional figures over a year ago, 3rd February, 2011, to be precise. The national census was held on 26th September, 2010.

{sidebar id=10 align=right}Since last Thursday’s big ‘launch’ of the 2010 National Census Report, the report (that was ‘outdoored’ but not seen) is yet to be made available anywhere for any person or organization to study. The GSS simply and incompetently presented to the public a few major headline data, which was, more or less, ready by February 2011.

What we expected to be launched on 31st May, 2012 (as was promised) was the full report of the September 2010 exercise. Instead, what we had was a partial report, with very scanty information for any serious planning or analysis.

Ordinarily, a census report should have, at least, the following:

1. Religion, Ethnicity and language backgrounds

2. How many non-Ghanaians are living in Ghana

3. Age distribution by gender or population pyramid, a basic graph which shows the structure of the population

4. Labour force information i.e. employment, unemployment status and income levels

5. Dependency ratio by region

6. Distribution of working age population by region and gender

7. Literacy rate

The lack of basic information on the above in the partial, piecemeal report on offer can only mean that the Ghana Statistical Service is either not ready or willing to release the 2010 census results.

Beyond, the regional and district breakdown of gender (and an oral presentation by the Government Statistician of the percentage of Ghanaians purportedly above the age of 18), what was presented as a report was anything but. So far, there is no proper documented report of the census available to the general public, the academia, businesses, NGOS or institutions of state. The GSS may do well to give the nation a roll-out plan for the rest of the data.

We are calling on the GSS to come out to explain this strange situation to Ghanaians. This is just not good enough from such an important national institution for such an important national assignment.

Confusion galore as gov't double speak on suspension of ECG Director

{sidebar id=10 align=right}.....There is total confusion as government scrambles to find a handle on a national disgrace brought about by the suspension of the Ghana-Lesotho World Cup qualifier after flood lights at the Baba Yara Sports stadium went off for well over an hour.

There is confusion as to whether the Ashanti Regional Director of the Electricity Company of Ghana has been suspended as a result of the incident. What remained certain, however, was that the game was suspended for well over an hour.

Communications Director at the Presidency Koku Anyidoho in a swift action told Joy News Alhaji Abdulai Kurah had been suspended with immediate effect but that was quickly countered by a statement from the Energy Ministry.

Flood lights went off at the Baba Yara Sports stadium resulting in a temporary hold-up in the World Cup qualifier game between the Black Stars and Lesotho.

Mr Koku Anyidoho, said the dismissals will affect all those in line of duty at ECG and all those who have something do with the matter.

He said "President Mills is upset and everybody who has a role to play in the matter will have their heads roll."

"This is unacceptable and the president is upset," he told Joy News.

Asked whether the decision to suspend the ECG Director had been communicated to him, Mr Anyidoho said, "The people of Ghana matter more so it does not matter whether they are informed or not."

He emphasised that those who are on the line of fire must be fired but there is doubt as to whether the statement carries any weight especially where the ECG itself is pleading innocence.

The blame for the incident should be placed squarely at the doorstep of the National Sports Council, PRO of the ECG, Erasmus Baidoo, said.

He said there was power supplied by the ECG and that it was a switch on the generator of the Sports Council that developed a fault resulting in the flood light going off.

"There is no reason why there is no power in the stadium except that the generators of the Sports Council developed a problem," he said.

According to Mr Baidoo, the stadium was running on the generators of the Sports Council and that ECG was only a backup.

If flood lights went off, therefore, he noted, the ECG cannot be held accountable.

His argument was confirmed by reporters at the stadium.
