The losing candidate in Saturday’s congress to elect a presidential candidate for the Convention Peoples Party says the success of the Congress marks the “beginning of the revival” of the CPP.

Bright Akwetey made the declaration in a concession speech shortly after Saturday’s Congress.

He polled 933 representing 44.8 per cent of the total votes cast by the over 2000 delegates whilst Dr Abu Sakara who was the 2008 vice presidential candidate polled 1,130 representing 55.2 per cent to be elected presidential candidate.

The CPP made headlines for all the wrong reasons early this year following disagreements between the leadership of the party and the 2008 presidential candidate Dr Papa Kwesi Nduom.

Dr Nduom broke away to form the Progressive Peoples Party taking away leading members of the CPP with him.

Political watchers have described the situation as injurious to a party trying desperately to be a viable alternative for the two leading political parties in Ghana.

After yesterday’s Congress, Bright Akwetey is under no illusion the party is on the verge of revival.

“I must thank all of you for your cooperation on this great event. This marks the revival or the beginning of the revival of the CPP. You cannot have it better than this.

“Now you have decided and we accept the decision wholeheartedly…”

“From now on it is for all of us to rally behind him as he is the flag of the party and let the party fly again.

The elected candidate, Dr Abu Sakara thanked Mr Akwetey for his generosity and support pledging to work together to get the CPP back into power.

“Let us believe we can do it. Let us leave no stone unturned in our efforts to [change] the fortunes of the party,” he said.
