“People matter, you matter” is not our slogan –NPP tells NDC
24 July 2012
The New Patriotic Party has made it clear to the NDC that the slogan “people matter, you matter” is not its slogan. Instead the NPP says that it is the title of a manifesto that has taken almost two years to shape up.
This revelation was made by the Coordinator of the NPP Manifesto Committee, Yoofi Grant on pm:EXPRESS Monday.
“{sidebar id=11 align=right}These are policies to be achieved by the people for the people. It is not about words that have been put together. It expresses the spirit of the manifesto. It is about the people that you serve. It is not to be the master of the people you serve but the servant of the people. So as you are putting your manifesto together, all the policies that go into it, you are thinking about the end user, the people that you are doing the manifesto for. For us, that is how it evolved. It is people matter, you the Ghanaian, you matter. It is first in what we say we are going to do and secondly in executing it”.
According to Mr. Grant, the tile of the NPP’s 2012 manifesto is - People Matter, You Matter. Change Now, Move Ghana Forward -BUILDING A FREE AND FAIR SOCIETY OF OPPORTUNITIES AND HOPE FOR EVERY GHANAIAN.
But the NDC says the slogan “people matter you matter” is a re-affirmation of their ideology of social democracy. Murtala Mohammed, aspiring MP for Nanton said the IEA has no cause to investigate the case of plagiarism because the slogan was first couched by the NDC. “When you look at page 45 of our 2008 manifesto, it is palpably stated there”, he said.
Mr. Mohammed pointed out that no liberal party is concerned about the people and found it strange that the NPP would cling to the slogan. Nevertheless, Yoofi Grant insisted NPP national programs thus far hints of a party that is people centered adding that “I can bet that if you go and look at the NDC 2008 manifesto, you will not see people matter you matter, you might see maybe people are important or people might matter -but not the two together”.
He said it is preposterous for the NDC to argue that their ideology leans more towards people than that of the NPP. He cited policies like the National Health Insurance Scheme, the capitation grant and even the school feeding program, as evidence that regardless of its free market/capitalist ideology, the NPP has been more “people centered” in its policies.
When asked by Host Stephen Anti, whether the NPP would consider changing the title of its manifesto seeing that the NDC claims it is their slogan, Yoofi Grant said; it would serve the NPP really good for the NDC to use its manifesto title as its slogan. He said, it would be like the NDC to campaigning for the NPP if the ruling party goes ahead to use the NPP’s manifesto title.
Meanwhile the IEA is investigating this slogan war and is yet to outdoor its findings. It is not clear whether the two parties will go ahead to launch their campaigns on the same day, as they’ve previously announced. But what is clear is that any party found to be in breach of the political parties’ code of conduct will be sanctioned.

Sneak preview of the NPP manifesto on pm:EXPRESS
Industrialization, private sector reform and education rank top on the list of strategies in the New Patriotic Party’s manifesto for election 2012 with Education being the bedrock.
{sidebar id=11 align=right}In a war of slogans’ debate on Joynews current affairs program pm:EXPRESS on Monday, Yoofi Grant, Coordinator of NPP Manifesto Committee said the ‘People Matter, You Matter’ is the title for the NPP’s manifesto, and not its slogan as the NDC claims.
He gave the hint in a heated discussion with the NYEP’s Deputy Coordinator, Murtala Mohammed as they both took entrenched positions on ownership of the slogan.
Both parties are still laying claims to the “People Matter, You Matter” slogan.
While the NPP says it is the title of its manifesto, the NDC insists, it is a campaign slogan that the NPP has stolen.
Murtala Mohamed, also the NDC Parliamentary candidate for Nanton in the Upper West region said the party’s policies and activities have always been people centred hence the use of the slogan that connects with the masses.
Meanwhile, the NPP is set to launch its manifesto on August 25 2012. Yoofi Grant, giving hints from the party’s policy document said it focuses on economic modernization to create opportunities for the masses.
In an interview after the show, he said the NPP will make investments in community health nursing and build basic clinics to make healthcare accessible to every Ghanaian.

Rawlings in short, cordial meeting with Mills
{sidebar id=11 align=right}Aide to former President Rawlings, Kofi Adams has confirmed the NDC founder last Thursday held a meeting with President Mills at the Castle.
Mr. Adams will however not disclose details of the meeting except to say it lasted a few minutes.
It is the first time in many months the two have met, albeit for a short period.
Ex-president John Rawlings has publicly criticised the sitting president for what he says are acts of corruption in government and failure to prosecute past government officials.
The criticisms have led to a rather sour relationship between the two with reports the ex-president and wife are behind the formation of a new political party; National Democratic Party.
Thursday's meeting, media reports suggest, is the latest attempt to reconcile differences between the two.
The Daily Guide newspaper also reported the two were in Equatorial Guinea at the invitation of that country’s President to mediate in the matter.
Kofi Adams however denied this in an interview with Joy News.
He said the ex-president was invited by the president of the Equatorial Guinea but was quick to add that at no point did Mr Rawlings meet President John Mills in Equatorial Guinea.
According to him, Mr Rawlings visited President Mills at the Castle to find how he was doing after he returned to the routine check-up in the US.
Adams said the meeting was short and cordial but will not discuss the details.

Koku Is Deceitful; Rawlingses Are On Our Side - NDP
The acting General Secretary of the National Democratic Party (NDP), Dr. Joseph Manboah-Rockson, insists the Rawlingses are one of the pivots of the party, and rubbished claims that they will join President John Mills on the campaign trail.
Former President Jerry Rawlings met sitting President Mills at the Castle last week and reports are that the former went to express his goodwill after the latter returned from a check-up trip some few weeks ago.
However, the Communication Director at the Presidency, Koku Anyidoho, is reported to have said the meeting between the two – whose strained relationship has affected the front and image of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) – shows that there is no cause for alarm among party members.
{sidebar id=10 align=right}Conversely, Dr. Manboah-Rockson has told Citi News Mr. Anyidoho was at his spinning best to gain political capital out of the meeting at the Castle, which was just a normal visit by Mr. Rawlings to know how the President was doing health-wise.
After leading the party’s delegation to the EC to present a list of founding members of the party, he said: “He [Anyidoho] was just deceiving the grassroot supporters because what they went there to discuss was totally different from what he is asserting. I don’t know where he got his information from.”
The acting scribe told Citi News’ Rabiu Mohammed: “The Rawlingses are behind the NDP and they will strongly campaign for us after we have launched our party.”
Dr. Manboah-Rockson fell short to disclose the names of the NDP founders, but confirmed they have furnished the electoral body with all the founding members across the country and are awaiting response from the Dr. Afari-Gyan-led Electoral Commission.

I’m Committed To Peace - Akufo-Addo
03 June 2012
{sidebar id=11 align=right}The presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Akufo-Addo, has urged the Ghanaian clergy to speak out against the politics of hypocrisy and double standards.
The flagbearer argued they undermine the virtues of truth, openness and transparency, which are vital for any functioning democracy.
Nana Akufo-Addo said this when he addressed the regional council of churches in Wa last Saturday to climax his campaign tour of the Upper West Region.
“The church should hold all parties equally accountable for the little infractions that threaten the proper working of our democracy,” he said. “No party or persons should be seen as sacred cows who are above criticism.”
{sidebar id=10 align=right}“Otherwise we give some people a blank cheque to do as they please and this is inimical to the smooth operation of our democracy," Nana Addo said.
Nana Akufo-Addo wondered why the President, Prof. J.E.A Mills has neither condemned nor expressed regret over all the incidences of violence that have been perpetrated by National Democratic Congress (NDC) goons against NPP people in Chereponi, Akwatia and Atiwa. He told the clergy that such silence from the President only emboldens the perpetrators of these acts to continue to perpetuate these anti-social acts.
Explaining his "all die be die" statement, Nana Akufo-Addo said that "all die be die" is certainly not and cannot mean a call to arms. He said he was only drawing attention to these brazen acts of violence that were being perpetrated by NDC people against NPP people, and that if nothing was done about them, the NPP people will be compelled to defend themselves and the democracy that Ghana has chosen to embark upon. "All die be die is not a statement of aggression" he emphasized.
He promised that if by the grace of God he becomes president of Ghana, the rule of law shall be truly operational. He assured the clergy, that he is a true Christian from the bottom of his heart. He said, the only thing that he doesn't do is to wear his Christianity on his sleeves and shout about it at the roof tops. This according to him is because he believes firmly in Jesus Christ's statement that "not all those who say lord, lord, shall enter the kingdom of heaven." Akufo-Addo emphasised that, for him, religion is a personal devotion and commitment to God. "It is a matter of the heart. And God knows, that I am devoted to his course", he added to applause from the members of the clergy.
In a related development, Akufo-Addo has assured Ghanaians that the rule of law will be truly operational when by God's grace, he becomes president. Akufo-Addo gave this assurance when he addressed a church service in Mampong-Ashanti, to mark the 75th anniversary celebration of the establishment of the Catholic Church in Mampong on Sunday. Akufo-Addo, who was the guest speaker at the forum, urged the Catholic Church to pray for peace in this year's election and specifically to pray for members of the Electoral Commission, so that they will conduct the election in a free and fair manner that will make it possible for both winners and losers to accept the verdict with equanimity.
Akufo-Addo, who was representing former president Kufuor at the function, asked the Catholic Church to pray for his victory in this year's election, so that he will inherit the throne that Kufuor had occupied before and to continue with his good works, which is being derailed by the NDC government. He was accompanied by senior members of the NPP in the Ashanti Region, including Dr. Richard Anane, Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, MP for Bantama and Mrs. Elizabeth Agyemang, MP for Oforikrom.
Akufo-Addo has since begun a tour of the Brong-Ahafo Region.**
