NPP: Mahama-Amissah Gov't Is An Uninspiring Caretaker Team
14 August 2012
Less than a week after the burial of the leader of the National Democratic Congress, Professor John Evans Atta Mills, the main opposition New Patriotic Party has launched a scathing attack on new president John Dramani Mahama and his administration describing them as incompetent and representing “anxiety instead of hope.”
At a press conference held in Accra on Tuesday, the National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party, Jake Obetsebi Lamptey intimated that President John Mahama led the Economic Advisory Team for more than 3½ years with now Vice President, Amissah Arthur, in charge of Monetary Policy, as the Governor of the Bank of Ghana saying that “the team that failed to deliver on the most important thing in our lives, the economy, are the same team who are in charge now.
{sidebar id=10 align=right}"President John Mahama and Vice President Amissah-Arthur are most responsible for the economic hardships that Ghanaians are suffering now.”
He further added that “they failed to manage the economy or deliver on the trust that President Mills had in them. They failed the people of Ghana and cannot be trusted or expected to offer anything new.”
The press conference seems to have taken the campaign gear a notch higher as the demise of President Mills slowed it down for about three weeks.
According to Mr. Obetsebi Lamptey “there is nothing new about the John Mahama-Amissah Arthur ticket. They have spent the last three years presiding over PR gimmicks, vile propaganda and the depreciation of the cedi.”
He also described the president as indecisive adding that “Within this relatively short period of his Presidency, we in the NPP have cause to worry about the incompetence shown by President John Mahama.
"His penchant to take bad decisions without consulting the relevant stakeholders, as in his flawed decision to turn the Jubilee House into a presidential cemetery; his shocking explanation to foreign diplomats that had he chosen his vice presidential nominee earlier he would have been accused of “assassinating the president”.
"...his strange and rash decision to launch his campaign during President Mills’ one week funeral celebration; the indecision characterizing the choice of a burial place for the late President.
“His decision to break his own admonition to NDC communicators by being the first to throw insults at Ghanaians by describing the unnecessary debate that he himself generated over the choice of burial place as “useless”.
The NPP believes that there is nothing new about the Mahama / Amissah-Arthur ticket adding Ghanaians should not expect anything new from them adding “we believe, to the majority of Ghanaians, nothing has changed with the coming into office of Mahama-Amissah Arthur’s uninspiring caretaker team.”

EC to withdraw controversial CI 73 creating new constituencies
The leadership of Parliament and the Electoral Commission (EC) have agreed to withdraw CI 73 which was to establish 45 new constituencies on account of several fatal errors on the CI.
The EC will replace the CI with an amended one.
The leadership of the House had been holding a crunch meeting to consider arguments for and against the withdrawal of the CI which was due to mature this week.
The Subsidiary Legislative Committee of Parliament had recommended the rejection of the CI, citing too many mistakes and errors in the law.
But members of the Majority maintained they wanted to see the law passed whilst steps were taken to correct the errors - a position governance watchers said was not right.
Joy News' Sammy Darko who is in Parliament says if the amended CI is laid, it will take its natural course of maturing after 21 sitting days from the day it is laid.
Parliament is set to go on recess and the CI may only mature after the House returns from the recess.
The EC had been guarding against this development given the closeness of the December polls.
It is unclear if the replacement of the CI 73 with an amended one will affect the EC's timetable and what the implications will be.

EC To Display Voters Register - September 1-10
{sidebar id=10 align=right}The Electoral Commission (EC) will begin the display of the biometric voters register from September 1 to 10, this year.
All the 23,000 centres where prospective voters were registered during the registration period would be opened for all to cross-check their data, make corrections and also ensure that their names are in the voter roll.
Originally the commission had indicated in official communication that the exhibition would be done in August, this year, but this has been changed to September.
The 10-day exhibition would enable the electorates correct minor errors that were made during the registration. The commission has also set aside seven days, from September 11 to 18, 2012, to make corrections and major changes. This type of correction would be done at the District Electoral Offices.
An official of the EC disclosed these to graphic.com.gh in Accra.
The information has since been confirmed confirmed by the Chairman of the People’s National Convention (PNC) and the National Organiser of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), Alhaji Ahmed Ramadan and Mr Abu Forgor respectively. The two represented their parties at an Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting last week.
There will be three documents at the exhibition centres. Registered voters can check their names, photographs and other particulars in the first document and make corrections if any.
The second document contains the names of those who were registered outside the stipulated registration period and such persons would not be able to cast their votes, because their names and photographs would not be in the register.
Those who engaged in multiple registrations will have their names in the third document. They will have the chance to offer grounds for engaging in multiple registration.
It is believed some people registered more than once for genuine reasons. They include instances where data collected were wrong and officials decided to correct them by organising a fresh registration. Others decided to register again because their pictures were blurred.
Most of those in this category registered at the same registration centre and on the same computer with most of their details being correct with the exception of one or two details.
However, those who were criminally minded and registered with different names and ages at different registration centres and in some cases in separate regions or districts, would be made to face the full rigours of the law.
Already the commission has established an Adjudication Committee which is reviewing the over 6,000 multiple registration cases.
The EC has also hinted that those found culpable during the adjudication process will have their photographs published in some national newspapers. They could also face legal action.
The commission carried out a nationwide Biometric Voter Registration exercise from March 24 to May 5, 2012, to produce a register to replace the photo voters register.

Flush Out NDC From Government
{sidebar id=10 align=right}The 2012 Vice presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia has called on all eligible Ghanaian voters to vote out the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to positively change their lives.
According to him, people vote for governments to come and solve problems inhibiting national development as well as assuage their suffering and not to increase or worsen it.
Therefore, if Ghanaians want to see positive change in their lives as they have been crying of hardship under the present NDC government, then they have to vote out the NDC government for NPP government to come and lessen their suffering, he said.
Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia delivered this campaign message during a town hall meeting which was held at Ghanaian Presbyterian Church in Toronto on July 21, 2012.
The theme for the meeting was “Taking action to restore and transform Ghana.”
According to him, the NDC, under the late President Atta Mills, promised Ghanaians a heaven of ‘Better Ghana’ Agenda which convinced Ghanaians to vote out the NPP.
“However, an economy under the NDC which produces oil, mines gold, produces cocoa and other natural resources in the past three and half years in office has borrowed money up to the tune of $25 billion more than CPP government and ex-president Kufuor’s government put together of nine billion dollars where has all these money gone can we see it.”
“For the past three and half years we have seen corruption that has never been seen before. Woyomization of the economy which is paying people for projects that have not been done, as Woyome money could have built several unit class room blocks.
“Over invoicing one unit classroom block doubled in three and half years, astronomical increase in cost of living, which has made Ghanaians in the country to ask for more remittances from their relatives in Diaspora,” he observed.
Dr Bawumia noted with sadness the rate at which corruption in government had impacted negatively, stressing that people were being paid for no jobs done to buy big stocks and foreign exchanges, which have all contributed to the depreciation of the cedi against foreign currencies such as the U.S dollar.
He said, “Under Nana Akufo Addo there would be no Woyomization but rather systematic improvement in public services from manual to database systems that will link all sectors which needs to be put in place to take out corruption.”
Earlier in a welcome address, the chairman of the Toronto NPP Chapter, Augustine Opoku-Agyeman stated that the purpose of the meeting was not to highlight the differences between NPP and NDC or any political party.
Rather as Ghanaian-Canadians, their primary objective is to see Ghana prosper so that all Ghanaians regardless of their status in society could enjoy their fundamental human freedoms and quality of life.
To achieve this, we need to ensure that leadership is given to men and women who will put the interest of the country ahead of their personal gains.
Accordingly, the Toronto chapter believes that the time has come for Ghanaians in the Diaspora, young and old, Christians and non-Christians to unite to invest in the development of the country.
“We must take actions to restore and transform Ghana. However no individual or group can do it alone. Such transformational change would require the collective efforts of all Ghanaian-Canadians and all Ghanaians elsewhere,” Opoku Agyeman noted.
