Mahama was insensitive in his remarks- Akomea

{sidebar id=10 align=right}Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party Nana Akomea has accused President John Mahama of being hugely insensitive to the sensibilities of the family of the late President John Mills and all Ghanaians.

Akomea described comments made by the new President during the one week remembrance ceremony at the Efua Sutherland Children’s Park as “untidy” “terrible” and “insensitive.”

President John Mahama, among other things, assured the thousands of mourners at the Park and millions others watching on TV of his unflinching desire to ensure continuity in government.

He said he is the only president born after Ghana attained independence and needed the support of every one to be successful.

His comments have ruffled the nerves of many especially those within the New Patriotic Party.

On Joy FM and MultiTV news analysis programe Newsfile on Saturday, Nana Akomea minced no words in chiding the sitting president, accusing him of using what should have been the time to heal wounds to make political partisan comments.

He said it was a national platform with people from diverse political groupings mourning the death of the late president and for President Mahama to use that platform to campaign was to say the least distasteful.

Nana Akomea said for the president to say the death of President John Mills was a “divine providence” was a “terrible insinuation” and insensitive to the immediate family of the late president.

He also launched a blistering attack on the president for saying he is the youngest president ever to have ascended the throne since independence.

{sidebar id=12 align=right}That comment Nana Akomea insisted was unnecessary and very insulting to the many leaders who were born before independence.

“It is quite insulting to all the leaders who have come [and] who were born before independence including President Mills himself.

“In any case when he had the chance to choose his vice presidential nominee he chose somebody who was born before 1957, so what is the point of all of this business about being born in 1957 and so on.

“There have been difficulties and for him to use that particular occasion to promote himself and his candidature was extremely insensitive and unwise,” he said.

He was also critical of the government and the way manner it has planned the funeral of the late president.

Old ladies and bones

But Kojo Adu Asare NDC Member of Parliament for Adenta who was also on the show maintained the NPP must seize posturing like the head master superintending over students.

He said for Nana Akomea and his group of NPP communicators to create the impression that the NDC has been incompetent in managing the funeral planning is unfortunate.

He described the one week funeral celebration of the late president as hugely successful and wondered why the NPP will dwell on a single comment made by the sitting president.

Kojo Asare said the NPP is behaving like the old men and women who always become jittery anytime a mention is made of bones.

He said he is not sure the idea was for the sitting president to use that platform to campaign and advised the NPP not to be “jittery.”

He also blamed the media for what he said were negative reportage on issues relating to the funeral planning.

He said the media at some point seemed to be enjoying the failures, rather than celebrating the successes.

He had to shut his radio at some point, he stated.

NDC Cautioned Against False Sense Of Popularity

{sidebar id=10 align=right}A lecturer at the Political Science Department of the University of Ghana, Dr. Seidu Alidu, says the many tributes being paid by Ghanaians on the death of Professor Mills should not make the NDC complacent and prevent the party from working harder.

He says if the NDC dwells on those sympathies showed by Ghanaians, thinking they will transform into votes during the December polls, it could be disastrous for the party.

Dr. Alidu spoke on GBC's Current Affairs Programme, ‘Behind the News’.

Touching on the nomination of Paa Kwesi Amissah Arthur as Vice Presidential nominee, Dr Alidu said in the event that Mr Amissah Arthur is chosen as the running mate of President Mahama, it could cause problems for the NDC.

This is because, it is a short time to market him.

Let Us Educate Supporters - Prez Mahama

{sidebar id=10 align=right}President John Dramani Mahama has appealed to the leadership of political parties to step up education programmes that would discourage their supporters from trading in insults during political campaigns.

He said the death of President John Atta Mills had opened a new page for Ghanaians to unite and boost the democratic credentials the country had achieved over the past years.

“We in government will do everything possible to conduct political activities with a sense of dignity and decency to continue to consolidate and raise Ghana’s enviable position in African political ladder,” President Mahama said when the leadership of the Assemblies of God Church, Ghana, called on him at the Osu Castle, Accra.

The delegation was at the Castle to commiserate with President Mahama on the death of President Mills.

It was also there to congratulate President Mahama for his assumption of office as President and to present a message from the Presidency of World Assemblies of God Fellowship.

President Mahama said leaders of political parties normally did not engage in political insults, and educating their supporters against the practice could help the Electoral Commission to effectively and peacefully conduct the December 7 polls.

He called on Ghanaians to be circumspect in their arguments concerning the death and burial of President Mills, to ensure peace and tranquility to befit the late President Mills as “Asomdwehene” (King of Peace).

The President declared Friday, August 10, a public holiday, to enable all Ghanaians everywhere to participate in President Mills’ funeral.

Reverend Dr Paul Frimpong Manso, General Superintendent of Assemblies of God Church in Ghana, who led the delegation, described the late President Mills as "A rainbow with many colours - a politician, an academician, Christian, humble and tolerant."

The clergyman commended politicians and journalists for conducting themselves well after the death of President Mills and asked them to extend the behavior to the December 7 polls.

Parliament Approves GH50m For MP's Offices

{sidebar id=10 align=right}Parliament has approved a loan of GHc50.00 million for the construction and furnishing of constituency offices for members of Parliament.

According to the report of the joint committee of Finance and Housing, the committee is requesting for approval for the provision of guarantee by the government of Ghana in respect of credit agreement between Sino Africa Development Company limited and Fidelity Bank limited.

The request was laid in the House on Friday July 20 2012 and referred to the joint Committee on Finance and Housing for consideration.

The report signed jointly by Mr James Klutse Avedzi, Chairman of the Committee, Alhaji Rashid Peluo, Deputy Majority Leader.

Mr Klutse, who read the report on the floor of Parliament said, the purpose of the request was to seek the approval of Parliament for government of Ghana to provide guarantee cover for the amount.

He said the committee observed that members of Parliament currently rely on family members and friends for secretarial support in the performance of their mandate.

Mr Klutse noted that most MPs keep their files and documents in their vehicles, a situation which causes them to lose many valuable and sensitive documents.

Additionally, the time spent by members of Parliament in their constituencies is thought of as one of the most gratifying and productive periods in the discharge of their duties as members of Parliament.

He said the provision of the offices would afford members the opportunity to stay in constant touch with the constituents and also afford the constituents the opportunity to meet their MPs at a designated place.

The building is expected to compose of an entrance terrace, reception, MPs Office, washroom, store room, meeting room, kitchenette and a lobby.

Mr Kluste said each member would be required to liaise with his or her district assembly to provide a suitable land for the project in the constituency.

The approval of the loan follows late President Mills 2009 State of the Nation address to Parliament where he pledged to among other things see to the construction and furnishing of constituency offices for members of Parliament.

The pledge was re-affirmed in the President’s 2010 State of the Nation Address, and in connection with this commitment, Sino Africa Development Company was undertaking the construction and furnishing of constituency offices for members of Parliament in all 320 constituencies of the country.

Swear in Amissah-Arthur Monday after vetting – Min. Leader

{sidebar id=10 align=right}The Minority Leader in Parliament, Hon. Osei Kyei Mensah-Bonsu, has advised that the Vice Presidential nominee, Kwesi Amissah-Arthur, be sworn in on Monday, August 6 after vetting to allow him a day of orientation.

He argued this will enable the fresh vice-president to take up his responsibilities on Wednesday right before President John Evans Atta Mills’ burial ceremony, which is scheduled from August 8-10.

According to the Minority Leader, the nominee’s swearing in which would be done in Parliament, will however be preceded by a debate and subsequent approval of the Appointments Committee’s report, which should be submitted to the House after the vetting on the same day.

It, however, means that Parliament may be sitting for an extended period on Monday if all these would have to play on as the legislator is suggesting.

Hon. Mensah-Bonsu was of the view that “if President [John] Mahama would want his vice by his side during the funeral of the late president which starts on Wednesday, then Mr. Amissah-Arthur should be sworn in on Monday so he be taken through some orientation on Tuesday, so he can start taking up his responsibility on the Wednesday.”

Parliament’s Appointment Committee has scheduled Monday, August 6 to vet the immediate past Governor of the Bank of Ghana, who was on Tuesday nominated by President Mahama as his vice-president.

The vetting would be done in public.
