Confirmed! Konadu goes for NDP flag-bearership

{sidebar id=10 align=right}After weeks of speculations and rumour mongering, it has now been confirmed that former First Lady, Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings will contest the flagbearership position of the National Democratic Party.

The NDP is holding a congress this Saturday at the Kumasi Sports stadium to do a number of things, the highlight being the selection of a flag-bearer.

There had been speculations about the former First Lady’s involvement in the formation of the party.

The General Secretary of the NDP, Dr. Joseph Manboa-Rockson Monday put the rumours to rest by confirming to Joy New that Mrs Rawlings would be contesting the party's flagbearership race.

He also disclosed that over 7,500 people are expected to attend the congress this Saturday.

He said two other persons interested in the flag-bearership slot were currently in talks with Mrs Rawlings.

It is his hope that the two will shelve their interest and allow her to be acclaimed as the consensus candidate to avoid a contest. He, however, refused to name the other two.

“Now that she has shown an interest and a desire to contest, we believe that a consensus will be reached amongst the three so that Mrs Rawlings becomes the flag-bearer and then we get a running-mate," he stated.

He said party executive will also be affirmed at the congress.

There is no "Better Ghana" anywhere! - Nduom

{sidebar id=10 align=right}The flag-bearer of the Progressive People's Party (PPP), Dr. Papa Kwesi Nduom, in a facebook post Monday, said the governing NDC should deceiving itself it has built a better Ghana.

He said the evidence across the country departed markedly from the government's much vaunted better Ghana.

Read below the entire post by Dr. Nduom.

Let’s talk about the performance, over the past 3.5 years, of the NDC administration, first led by the late President Mills and now by President Mahama. We want to be clear – THERE IS NO BETTER GHANA ANYWHERE.

This government was put in charge of this country to solve the numerous problem our nation encounters. But this government, the one led by President John Mahama, has failed the Nation. This government has failed because if you go to communities throughout the length and breadth of this country many, many people are drinking disease infected water. The low quality of education is making many of our children fail examinations. They cannot advance their education and go to a higher level. Electricity has remained a problem, and now we are experiencing the severe inconvenience of LOAD SHEDDING, which quite simply means, you are working and all of a sudden you have no power. You are holding an important event, and you must look for a generator. You look at the bad roads, the dangerous roads our people have to travel on. And in this 21st our people still are encountering and suffering from Malaria, Cholera, Guinea worm and we hear yellow fever has reappeared in parts of our country.

My fellow Ghanaians, ARE YOU BETTER OFF THAN YOU WERE ON JANUARY 2009? Listen to our young men and women, especially those who have been lucky enough to go to a polytechnic or a university who are still walking about this country looking for a job. Many are still staying at home with their mothers and fathers who have to feed them still after making all of those investments to take them through tertiary intuitions.

This government has failed our people and does not deserve another 4 years. The term of office of any president is 4 years. That is it! It is only when one does well, when one improves the prosperity, the living condition, the livelihood of the people, that is when the President is given 4 more years. 4 more years does not come automatically. So lets us not listen when those NDC people, to John Mahama, when they make the argument that somebody got 8 years and so automatically, they also deserve 8 years.

Our people do not deserve to go through another difficult 4 years, even when we now have the benefit of oil revenue. Even when this country has been enjoying relatively high cocoa and gold prices. So, what is the value, the value of the votes that were cast in 2008? This is why we tell Ghanaians, do not waste your votes on those who have failed you in this 4th Republic! And this current administration, with John Mahama, has failed the people of Ghana.

It is important that we all know that there is an alternative, and that alternative comes from the Progressive People’s Party. The party has been very clear, very specific about the opportunities that it is bringing to each and every one of the 10 regions of this country. It is the only party that is saying that we have raw materials, that with the support of government, we can produce more here in Ghana. With facilitation by government, with Joint Ventures, with Private Public Partnerships, we can implement processing plants, factories that would use our own raw materials to create millions of employment opportunities for our people. With the right government in power, all Ghanaians can have the benefit of a job, can have the benefit of money, can have the benefit of the happiness that comes from the sweat of your labour!

And that is why we say:

PPP Nyi, Edwuma Nyi, Sika Nyi; Ahoto Nyi!!

Thank you very much and may God Bless this homeland we call Ghana!

I deserve respect, courtesy – Rawlings tells NDC leadership

{sidebar id=10 align=right} Former President Jerry John Rawlings has written to the leadership of National Democratic Congress, to officially register disgust at the treatment meted to him and his office.

The former President’s Office in a response to an invitation he received on Wednesday to attend the party’s manifesto launch in Ho on Thursday, stated Mr. Rawlings was not privy to the contents of the manifesto which he is expected to speak about.

The supposed invitation was also wrongly dated, according to Mr. Rawlings' Office.

"The letter inviting His Excellency was prepared in haste, it seems and was dated September 2, 2012 and the event was erroneously scheduled for September 4," stated the reply, from ex-President Rawlings' Office signed by Captain H. Afeku-Amenyo (Retired) and dated 3rd October, 2012.

The former President also expressed abhorrence at the “deliberate use of the former President’s name to advertise such events when he has either received no invitation or confirmed his attendance at such events.”

“Our Office is reachable through several means and it is incumbent on party officials who are in charge of such events to crosscheck His Excellency’s receipt and acceptance of such invitations before the public is misled into believing that he is attending such events,” the letter stated.

Nana Addo slams government for collapsing NHIS in Ashanti

Nana Addo slams government for collapsing NHIS in Ashanti

{sidebar id=10 align=right}The flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party Nana Akufo-Addo is accusing government of deliberately collapsing the National Health Insurance Scheme in the Ashanti Region.

The scheme is facing some challenges in the region following attempts by the National Health Insurance Authority to pilot the reformed capitation policy in the region.

The capitation policy which began in January 1, 2012, ties a subscriber down to one service provider or hospital for at least six months with the view to eliminating corruption in the implementation of the policy.

A member of the NHIA Board, Dr Abbah Foli, justified the selection of the Ashanti Region for the pilot project insisting if the NHIS is able to handle the challenges in the region it would have solved the national problem.

However, the implementation of policy has faced huge challenges with many stakeholders in the region kicking against it.

Addressing party supporters in the Asawase constituency in the Ashanti Region as part of his restore hope campaign tour, the NPP flagbearer minced no words in chiding the ruling party for piloting the policy in the region.

He could not understand why a region with the highest number of subscribers to the NHIS will be chosen to pilot such a delicate policy.

He explained a policy is piloted using a small group to see how feasible it will be and not the largest.

He entreated people in the region to vote massively for the NPP so that it will reverse the policy and put it back on the right track.

Joy News’ correspondent Benjamin Tetteh who is with the NPP flagbearer said the campaign team is now at the Kwabre East constituency interacting with arts and crafts producers.

He reported the NPP flagbearer as saying an NPP government will put measures in place to ensure that arts and craft producers will benefit immensely from their trade.

Nana Addo also promised to improve upon the cocoa spraying exercise in the region to ensure increased cocoa production in the region.

Spare Tyre Caretaker President Will Become The Cornerstone- Prez Mahama

{sidebar id=10 align=right} President John Dramani Mahama on Wednesday said his days as President would go beyond the December general elections.

“Some opponents have called me spare tyre, while others have also described me as caretaker President, but all I can say for now is it is God that chooses a leader and I know for sure that the spare tyre, caretaker will become the cornerstone.”

President Mahama said this when he addressed separate rallies at Juapong, Asikuma and Peki as part of his three-day campaign tour of the Volta Region.

Apart from addressing the rallies, the President would also launch the National Democratic Congress (NDC) manifesto in Ho on Thursday, inspect and inaugurate development projects in the Municipality and meet party members.

The President is accompanied by Mr Joe Gidisu, Minister of Roads and Highways, Mr Fritz Baffour, Minister of Information, Ms Akua Dansua, Minister of Tourism, Mrs Dzifa Attivor, Deputy Minister of Transport, Mr Alex Segbefia, Deputy Chief of Staff and Mr Fiifi Kwetey, Deputy Minister for Finance.

President Mahama, quoting the Bible, said, “The stone that the builders rejected, shall become the cornerstone, and I know NDC will win the 2012 general election one-touch.”

He said this year’s election would be peaceful and called on the electorate to reject parties that were beating war drums in the country.

The President appealed to NDC members to avoid voting ‘Skirt and blouse’ a system where the electorate vote for a particular presidential candidate and a Parliamentary candidate from another political party, as that was not healthy for effective governance.

President Mahama promised that government would roll out a number of development projects throughout the country and urged those that have not yet received their share to remain tolerant and patiently wait for their turn.

On the creation of districts and their capitals, President Mahama said it was not possible for all those who applied to receive at the same time and advised that those that were not considered should cooperate with others until another more are created in subsequent years.

The chiefs of Juapong, Atimpoku, Peki and Asikuma all called on government to provide them with good roads, schools and health facilities to enhance their living conditions.
