MICHEAL OSEI Appiah, a 20-year-old unemployed man who posed as a private soldier in the Ghana Armed Forces has been convicted and sentenced to pay a fine of GH¢500 or go to prison for 18 months in default.

The new convict also risks serving another jail term should he go contrary to his newly signed bond of good behaviour for a period of one year.

He was convicted by an Obuasi Circuit Court presided over by Gilbert Ayisi Addo after changing his plea to guilty of impersonation, contrary to section 134 of Act 20/60.

Police Prosecutor, ASP Seth Sewornu told the court that the complainant was Staff Sergeant Boahen Noah of 4BN in Kumasi, who was on an anti-galamsey operation at AngloGold Ashanti in Obuasi.

The convict, on the other hand, is an unemployed school leaver resident at Bohyen-Asuogya in the Kumasi Metropolis.

According to the prosecution, on January 10 2010, at about 7:30pm, the complainant, who was dressed in mufti, met the convict on board an Obuasi-bound Metro Mass Transit bus in Kumasi fully dressed in the military uniform.

The complainant suspected that Osei Appiah was an imposter when he realized that the convict was not properly dressed to the standard of the military, he then confronted him in the bus.

ASP Sewornu said the convict insisted he was a regular soldier in the Ghana Armed Forces but could not produce his appointment card upon a challenge.

On arrival at the Obuasi MMT station, the complainant rang his colleagues in town, who came and assisted with the arrest of the imposter.

They later handed him over to the police, and after investigations he was charged with the offence and arraigned subsequently.

The jailed Ashley BlakeBBC presenter jailed for hitting youth with pole

Ashley Blake, who worked for Midlands Today, gets two years for unlawful wounding of 17-year-old at pub.

A BBC presenter who hit a teenage boy in the face with a wooden pole was jailed for two years today.Ashley Blake, who worked for Midlands Today, was convicted last month of unlawful wounding after an incident at the pub he owned in Sutton Coldfield, West Midlands, in January.

Jurors at Birmingham crown court heard that Blake took a patio umbrella pole from behind the bar and swung it above his head, striking 17-year-old Greg Jones in the face.
Jones, who had been attending a birthday party, suffered injuries to his lip and chin. He had been trying to act as a peacemaker after a customer, Steven Sproule, punched another youth unconscious, the court heard.

Sproule, 38, of Birmingham, admitted assault occasioning actual bodily harm and was jailed for 13 months. He had been serving a suspended sentence for driving offences at the time of the incident.

Blake, 40, was also found guilty of intending to pervert the course of justice after throwing the pole into a neighbouring garden centre in an attempt to conceal it from police.
The court heard that Blake had a string of previous convictions dating back to the 1980s and 1990s for theft, handling stolen goods and driving while disqualified. He was sacked by the BBC two weeks after his conviction on 3 August.

His barrister, Nigel Rumfitt QC, said Blake had already been punished. Blake had been "an extremely successful man" but had "panicked" and became a "ruined" one, he said.
"In a few moments he threw all that away. He overreacted to a violent situation that was not his making. He was going places. His career is in tatters," Rumfitt said.
The judge, Peter Carr, told the defendants: "This was a serious episode of public violence. What each of you did was so serious that an immediate custodial sentence cannot be avoided."

A London Vicar's Daughter Leapt to her Death from a A Third-floor Window to escape Bullies

Rosimeiri Boxall, 19, plunged from a third-floor window in Blackheath after being assaulted by girls who were aged 13 and 17, the jury was told.

The teenagers had been arguing over a boy and part of the incident was recorded on a mobile phone by a friend half-an-hour before the death, the court heard. Roger Smart, prosecuting, said Miss Boxall, known as Rosie, had not wanted to fight and was passive throughout the incident in May, last year.

The short mobile clip shown to the court showed her being slapped and her hair pulled. After screams were heard from the top floor of a Victorian house in Coleraine Road, Miss Boxall was heard to fall. The teenagers, who had been swigging vodka from a bottle, ran out and the younger girl was heard to continue verbally abusing Miss Boxall as she lay dying, it is alleged. Mr Smart continued: 'Outside, she continued to verbally abuse Rosie, calling her a whore and f***ing bitch as she lay dying on the ground.' The girl had picked up Miss Boxall's mobile phone as she lay injured and after throwing it back down, said 'serves you right, bitch', the jury was told.

A witness had heard the girls blaming each other before the younger girl was said to have packed a bag and made an attempt to leave. Paramedics arrived but found Miss Boxall, who had multiple injuries, was not breathing and had no pulse. Miss Boxall was the adopted daughter of the Rev Simon Boxall, the Anglican vicar at the Open Gateway Community Church in Thamesmead, south-east London. Oluwakemi Ajose, 19, of Charlton, south-east London, who was known as Kemi, and a 15-year-old girl who cannot be named for legal reasons, deny manslaughter.

Miss Boxall had been born in Brazil where she was adopted by Mr Boxall and his wife Rachel. They came to live in the UK in January 2005. Mr Smart said Ajose lived in the flat which was part of a house run by Greenwich social services to allow young people to live independently. Mr Smart said: 'Rosie leapt to her death from the kitchen window of Kemi's flat to escape from a prolonged period of physical and verbal abuse.' The trial continues.

Boy Kills Dad

By Linda Tenyah

SHOCK AND amazement gripped residents of Wangara, a village near Nsawam in the Eastern region on Wednesday, when a 23-year-old man killed his father, having slashed the throat of the old man with a cutlass.

The man, whose name was given as Numeglo Alavanyo, killed his father, Norvinyo Alavanyo, whilst the old man was fast asleep on his bed.

Briefing DAILY GUIDE, the Nsawam District Commander, DSP Alex Wowolo, stated that on December 16, 2009, around 11am, the police received a desperate call that a man had murdered his father in cold blood.

“The police rushed to the scene only to find the lifeless body of an 80-year-old man in a pool of blood in his room”, he disclosed.

The Police Commander added that the suspect was unable to flee, following his arrest by some residents of the village. He was immediately handed over to the police, who transferred him to their custody.

During interrogation, the suspected murderer told the police that after returning from the farm around 10am on the fateful day, he found his father asleep in his room and something prompted him to slash his throat.

DSP Wowolo said Numeglo Alavanyo claimed to have discovered that the victim was his father only after he had slashed his throat. He is expected to appear before court today.

Briefing the paper, the suspected murderer’s elder brother, Kwesi Alavanyo, indicated that on that fateful day, he went to the farm with Numeglo Alavanyo, as their father was then still asleep.

“Numeglo Alavanyo, who could not work, then left the farm very early for the house as I joined him later”, he said.

Kwesi Alavanyo, who claimed he could not work alone, returned to the house after the departure of his brother a few minutes later.

Upon reaching the house, he heard a loud distress call and rushed to his father’s room only to find his brother, holding a cutlass smeared with blood, standing by the old man.

“I then rushed to the police station and my junior brother was picked up thereafter”, he added.

The body of the 80-year-old man has been deposited at the Nsawam Government Hospital morgue awaiting transfer to the Police Hospital.

300 Youth to be Employed in Afforestation

{sidebar id=11 align=right}Three hundred youth in the Kwaebibirem District would gain employment

when the National Afforestation Project takes off in the area.

Announcing this at a meeting of the assembly at Kade, Mr George Agyemang Duah, the District Chief Executive, noted that Kwaebibirem had virtually lost all of its forests and called on members of the assembly t= o embrace the programme when it is launched to help make it a success. Kwaebibirem in Akan means tropical rain forest and as the name depic= ts, the district used to have a great deal of virgin forests.

But as a result of timber harvesting; -mainly by illegal chainsaw operators- bad farming practices; diamond mining; and recently gold minin= g, the district has lost virtually all its forests.

Mr Duah said the afforestation project would cover a period of five years and would offer full time employment for thousands of people nation=

wide. "The project has come at a right time to reduce the high number of unemployed youth," the DCE said. Mr Duah told members that they would all be involved in the selection of those to be employed. The Member of Parliament (MP) for Akwatia, Dr Kofi Asare, cautioned that in choosing the employees for the project, care should be taken to avoid partisan considerations.

He jobless Ghanaians, irrespective of party affiliations, needed employment so it would be wrong and unjustifiable if those to be employed.

were chosen along political party lines.
