50% Of Graduates Not Likely To Get Jobs - VC
{sidebar id=11 align=right}Former Director of the Institute of Statistical Social and Economic Research (ISSER) and now Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Professor Ernest Aryeetey has said that about 50 percent of university graduates are likely not to find jobs after their national service.
According to him, Ghanaians continue to face unemployment problems because government policies over the years, have not properly addressed the issues.
“For twenty years, we have always said that unemployment deserves greater attention in policy and that government policies are also not likely to lead to any major job creation simply because those policies are designed for a free market economy, but here the market is not really free.
"There are too many structural constraints that cannot be erased simply through policy.
“But I know that 50% of students who leave our universities will not gain employment for about two years after national service and about 20% of that will not find jobs for about three years and these are the kind of figures we, in this country should be concerned about”.
He was speaking at the launch of ISSER’s report on the state of the economy.
Professor Aryeetey suggested that in solving the problem, there is the need for a proper industrial policy that will address the issues perpetually. The Vice-Chancellor said that with the current problem, many university graduates will be unemployed for a while.

4-Year SHS produces unprecedented results
{sidebar id=11 align=right}Information reaching the New Statesman indicates that the first batch of students who went through the four-year Senior High School system introduced by the
erstwhile Kufuor-led New Patriotic Party administration, and truncated prematurely by the Mills-Mahama led National Democratic Congress administration, in fulfillment of a partisan manifesto pledge, have recorded a very impressive results in the West African Senior Secondary Certificate Examination they took in April-May, this year.
Our sources among members of the Conference of Heads of Assisted Senior Secondary Schools who corroborated the information said many schools across the country have produced results that are unprecedented since the inception of the Senior Secondary (now Senior High) School system.
Even though the full statistics of the results are yet to be made public by the West African Examination Council, many teachers the New Statesman has contacted say the results of their schools are devoid of the usual abysmal performance often associated with some core subjects, especially English Language, Mathematics and Integrated Science.
“The results of my students are just fantastic and both the students and their parents are overwhelmed with joy. So far the results my students have accessed through the internet indicate that even the weak ones obtained at least C6 in my subject,” Dennis Kwakwa, a Biology teacher at the Kumasi Girls Senior High School, told the New Statesman at the weekend.
The results come as a vindication of the wisdom in the decision by the previous Kufuor-led New Patriotic Party administration to extend the duration of the SHS programme from three years to four years.
On the other hand, the results come as an embarrassment for the incumbent Mills-Mahama led National Democratic Congress government that intractably disregarded expert advice to allow the new system to run for some time and went ahead to revert it to three years, against the wishes and aspirations of majority of Ghanaians.
Acting on expert, professional advice, the Kufuor administration extended the duration of SHS from three years to four years, as part of the 2007 educational reforms arising our the work carried out by the Anamuah-Mensah Committee.
The decision of the Kufuor administration was supported by both the Conference of Heads of Assisted Senior Secondary Schools and the Conference of Heads of Private Second Cycle Schools, as well as overwhelming Ghanaians, especially students, teachers and parents who are the major stakeholders of education.
The Mills-Mahama led NDC government, upon assumption of office, however, took what many described as a partisan decision to revert the four-year duration to three years, ostensibly to fulfill a manifesto promise.
Even though the decision was met with a lot of opposition from majority of Ghanaians, going by the public debate of the issue, President Mills and his government remained adamant in their resolve to fulfill a campaign pledge.
Those in support of the four-year duration, such as Prof Addae-Mensah, former Vice Chancellor of the University of Ghana, were of the view that increasing the duration of the SHS programme would help reverse the high number of students who were unable to qualify for admissions into the universities and other tertiary institutions.
Nana Oboedum V, National President of the Conference of Heads of Private Second Cycle Schools, noted at the time that it had become obvious that products of the three-year secondary school had less holistic educational opportunities.
“We are on the ground and we know what is happening; four years of secondary education should be better in our current circumstances,” he stated in an interview with the GNA.
In the view of Nana Oboedum, four years would “enable students cope with problematic core subjects like English Language, Mathematics, Integrated Science, Social Studies and ICT, which are taught at the first year before elective subjects are added in the second year”.
On the other hand, opponents of the four-year programme had maintained that the dismal academic performance at the Senior High school level did not lie in the extension of the duration.
This generated a lot of public debate, compelling the government to organise a national forum on the duration in May 2010, in an attempt to obtain a national consensus.
Even though a consensus could not be reached, and it was also clear that the majority of Ghanaians, including teachers, parents and students of the Senior High Schools, were in favour of the four-year duration, the Mills-Mahama government decided to sacrifice national collective interest and aspiration on the altar of meeting parochial partisan desire.

51-Year-Old Man Impregnates 16-Year Old Step-Daughter
{sidebar id=11 align=right}A 51-year old machine operator, John Apardo did the unthinkable by defiling his 16 year old step-daughter, impregnating her as a result.
The court remanded him into police custody for defilement and incest and to re-appear in court on August 24.
The mother of the victim, Agnes Gyemfua, was also remanded for conspiracy, aiding, and abetment of crime. Giving the facts of the case, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Raymond Kofi Erzuah told a Bibiani Circuit court presided over by Mr. Emmanuel Ankamah that, early this year, the accused (Apardo) had sexual intercourse with his step-daughter when the mother had travelled.
He said the accused warned his step-daughter not to disclose the act to anyone, but she became pregnant in June this year and her mother detected the pregnancy. DSP Erzuah said when the mother confronted her daughter, she confessed that her step-father (Apardo) was responsible for the pregnancy.
When the mother asked the husband (Apardo), he accepted responsibility for his step-daughter’s pregnancy and explained that he was drunk when he had sex with the step-daughter and pleaded for
forgiveness.
DSP Erzuah said Apardo presented two fouls and one schnapps bottle to enable the mother perform rituals for the abomination he had committed with the step-daughter.
Realising the gravity of the offence and embarrassment, the mother took her daughter to a clinic at Sefwi-Ahwianso Tanoso and aborted the pregnancy, DSP Erzuah added. After the abortion, the victim developed some health complications and for fear of the girl dying, the mother reported the case to the victim’s uncle, Mr. Prince Amoako Atta who became furious by the action of the accused prompting the mother to report the case to the police.
DSP Erzuah said the Police arrested of the man who performed the abortion at Sefwi-Ahwianso Tanoso and remanded him into police custody.

70% Can’t Pay School Fees In Sunyani
THE SUNYANI Municipal Chief Executive, Kwasi Oppong Ababio, has disclosed that about 70 percent of residents in the Sunyani Municipality come to him for help to pay their wards’ school fees anytime school reopens.
He attributed the situation to the high level of unemployment in the municipality and said government was doing its best to create jobs in the area so as to end the trend.
The MCE was speaking on Joy Fm’s Super Morning Show with Kojo Oppong Nkrumah in Sunyani. The morning show team is there to broadcast live the NDC congress.
According to him, although there are many problems related to water, electricity and roads, the major one is the inability of parents to pay their wards’ school fees.
He pointed out that Sunyani does not have a serious problem when it comes to electricity as compared to other regions, but said there is still room for improvement.
On the congress, the MCE said all is set to make it a success. He noted that the congress will end up uniting the NDC more than before.
Earlier in the week, the MCE told a Sunyani-based radio station that the Sunyani Municipal Assembly funded half of the money used for the renovation of the Coronation Park towards the NDC’s congress.
His statement has since received public bashings, with residents accusing him of using public funds for party politics.
Meanwhile, the founder of Real Democratic Patriots Party (RDPP), Raphael Cubagee, popularly called Shamo Quaye, has accused the MCE of using the assembly’s money to wed his wife.
He also alleged that the MCE has refused to probe the dealings of the past administration since he mentioned in his first sessional address at the assembly that he was not there to witch-hunt anybody because he did not want to face any probe after his exit.
Mr. Cubagee also accused the Regional Minister, Kwadwo Nyamekye-Marfo, of allegedly using state money to travel with women to the United States.
According to him, these are some of things that compelled him to leave the NDC to form the RDPP
