State Drive For Mills Before August 10 Burial

The casket containing the remains of late President John Evans Atta Mills will be paraded through some principal streets of Accra to afford Ghanaians the opportunity to pay their final respect.

The routes are yet to be finalised by the Funeral Committee.

President John Mahama and his colleague heads of state as well as ordinary Ghanaians will also file past the body at the B anquet Hall of of State House from August 8 to 10, 2012.

Briefing journalists on the elaborate programme for the funeral of the President, the Chaiman of the committee, Mr Kifi Totobi-Quakyi said, for security reasons, some major roads leading to the State House and the Black Star Square would be closed to public traffic to make way for motorcades and convoys.

According to the programme, the casket containing the body of President Mills would be handed over to the family to perform customary rites at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, August.

At 4pm the same day, the casket would be opened opened for President Mahama, his Vice, other state officials, members of the Council of State and representatives of political parties to pay their last respect.

Afterwards the public would be given the opportunity to file past the casket.

On Wednesday evening, there would be musical and cultural display at the forecourt of the State House.

Public viewing of the body would resume at 6 a.m.on Thursday, August 9, 2012.

The evening of Thursday will be dedicated to the reading of tributes and all-night prayer service.

On Friday, August 10, which marks the final day of the activities, the family will again be offered the chance to perform the final rites after which the Military will convey the casket to the Black Star Square for the Church Service which is expected to last one and a half hours.

Before the church service, only President Mahama and other visiting heads of states would have the opportunity to pay their final respects to the late President at the Black Start Square.

President Mahama would light the perpetual flame.

Mr Kofi Totobi Quakyi, said the nature of the committee whose membership include representatives of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), reinforced the fact that the funeral was a national affair and that “all Ghanaian are members of the committee”.

In an answer to a question, he explained that “as far as the consultations with the broad family were concerned, the late President will be buried once.

Mr Totobi-Quakyi said ,the committee would not spend unnecessary to over-burden the nation, especially knowing the simple nature of the deceased.
