24 August 2012

The NPP flagbearer, Nana Akufo-Addo has described the NDC’s attempt to make a better candidate out of President Mahama's youthfulness as ridiculous.

More Details

The ruling NDC’s Communications team has often argued that President John Mahama who is 54 will appeal more to the electorate than Nana Akufo-Addo, who is almost 70 years.

But Speaking to Citi News at the end a media encounter on Thursday in Accra, Nana Addo said age is not an issue in a campaign. “I am not worried about this business of age. There are old people who are very young at heart and there are young people who are very old a heart.

"There are old people who appeal to young people and there are young people who appeal to old people. For me, making a campaign around age suggests that you don’t have much to say,” said Nana Addo. According to him, a campaign message has to be about “your ability to deliver on the things that you have to say.

"There are young leaders who have performed; there are young leaders who have not performed. There are old leaders who have performed and there are old leaders who have not performed so the issue is never about age like it isn’t one of sex or tribe or religion so I am not worried about the age of my opponent.”

The NPP flagbearer also called on the media to create a platform for issue-based discussions.

He said “you are doing a noble work and I want to encourage you to continue down that path especially, the path of responsible journalism that you marshal the facts and give the various different perspectives of issues before you also advance your own conclusions.”
