Nana Konadu‘Free SHS is not impossible’- Nana Konadu

Flagbearer of the National Democratic Party (NDP), Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings has described the free SHS policy being touted by the NPP as “not impossible,” citing the Constitution and explaining it as a right and a duty of all parties and government.

This is in sharp contrast with the position held by the party her husband founded, which has rubbished Nana Akufo-Addo’s pledge to extend basic education to the Senior High School level and make it free.

Speaking to Adom News on Monday, Mrs Rawlings emphasized her belief in the youth as the future leaders of the nation who need to be empowered to take up leadership roles through education, and offering free education was the right way to do it, although it was just the first step.

An NDP government under her leadership, she announced, would emphasise the development of entrepreneurial skills to accelerate job creation.

‘Even if we are able to offer free education as a constitutional duty, there is the need to create jobs to absorb the young people into society to benefit all’.

Mrs. Rawlings described herself as servant of the people, seeking the interest of the masses above hers.

She sharply rejected rumours that she was in alliance with the New Patriotic Party (N.P.P) to destroy the party founded by her husband, explaining that the NDC had rejected several moves to ensure the peace, including an invitation to attend the N.D.P congress in Kumasi over the weekend which was ignored.

She said the N.D.P is not at loggerheads with the N.D.C but decided to part ways because of the involvement of the N.D.C in corruption and other social vices, ignoring the key principles of probity, accountability and social justice on which the party was founded.

The leader of the N.D.P says she wants to be known as a bold woman, who has worked for the cause of people while empowering women.

Mrs. Rawlings disclosed that a team is currently meeting to discuss and shortlist a suitable running mate for the general elections, which will soon be made public.

Asked if she has received any support from any of the women groups championing the empowerment of women, Nana Konadu singled out WILDAF and praised them for their encouragement so far adding, other groups both social and religious have equally been supportive of her mission.
