This disclosure was made by the Minister of Information and Media Relations, Mahama Ayariga.

The Commission in support with the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) and Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) is tasked to support the victims of the fire outbreak.

Hon. Ayariga revealed on Radio Gold on Monday that “His Excellency has directed that a Commission should look into it and present him with a report. And he’s also directed the NADMO officials and other government agencies working with the Finance Ministry to work out a way of supporting the victims of the fire outbreak…He’s asked NADMO to collaborate with the Accra Metropolitan Assembly, the Regional Coordinating Council and other agencies, so that they can find a way of achieving that objective and to report regularly to him.”

He advised Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) to take a critical watch over the markets they construct in order to avoid a recurrence of the unfortunate incident.

He said they should be “proactive in this regard and must take measures to review these structures.”

According to him, President Mahama has also directed AMA to work together with other agencies and take measures to ensure that fire tenders get easy access to fire-prone areas in the Metropolis.

Also, the AMA has been charged with the responsibility of redesigning the markets and public spaces in the country so as to avoid similar disasters in the future.

The AMA and all assemblies, he said, have been asked by the President “to consider the way that they design and operate their markets…It has reached a stage where government believes that the assemblies will have to rethink the design of their markets, given the number of fire outbreaks that we have experienced in our various markets; I think that at this stage there must be holistic review of the whole sector”, to mitigate the situation.
