Akufo-Addo wanted to kill Rawlings in 2008 – Yamoah Ponko
A senior member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Afrifa Yamoah Ponko, has accused the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Akufo-Addo of sending armed men to kill former President Rawlings in Kumasi four years ago.
According to Mr Yamoah Ponko, who is also the Municipal Chief Executive for Ejisu-Juaben in the Ashanti Region, he was personally present at the Golden Tulip Hotel when the armed men stormed the hotel in late 2008 and it took the intervention of persons close by to foil the plot.
He made the allegation on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem morning show of October 15, 2012 while contributing to discussions on the endorsement of former first lady Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings as flagbearer of the breakaway National Democratic Party at the weekend.
The former Ashanti region head of the National Health Insurance Scheme expressed surprise at the actions of former President Rawlings, particularly his recent meeting with the NPP flagbearer.
“I want to say it today for all Ghanaians to know: 2008 at the Golden Tulip formerly City Hotel Kumasi Nana Akufo-Addo and his people, armed men, came there looking for Jerry Rawlings to kill him. I was there, and it was only God who saved you (Rawlings)…
“I made a lot of noise about it before the 2008 elections. I believe if your time to die has not come, no one can kill you,” he declared.
He wondered what had suddenly come over Mr Rawlings, now consorting with the man who, together with former President Kufuor, ‘did not allow you and your wife to breathe freely’ during the NPP’s term of office, and but for the vigilance of NDC supporters and sympathizers, former president Kufuor and Nana Akufo-Addo would have jailed Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings in Ghana.
Nevertheless, the NDC had only grown stronger after the apparent defection of the Rawlingses, Mr Ponko said, and called on members of the party to close ranks and ensure President Mahama wins a one-touch victory with “53%” of the vote.
Also commenting, the Editor of the Al-Hajj newspaper, Alhaji bature Idrissu, has claimed that he saved former president Rawlings from being jailed about 6 years ago.
While declining to give details, a charged Bature insisted Mr Rawlings was not as clean as he would want the world to believe.
“You are not a saint, President Rawlings. You know it! I will not sit down for you to destroy the memory of President Mills...I want Rawlings to come out and say I did not save him from going to jail and I will bring out the details. There are living witnesses who can attest to this."

NPP has signed pact with NDP to destroy the NDC – NDC group claims
A group loyal to the National Democratic Congress and calling itself “The Facts Forum”, has accused flagbearer of opposition New Patriotic Party of working with breakaway NDC with the sole motive of destroying the ruling party.
Spokesperson of the Facts Forum Peter Boamah Otokunor made the accusation when he addressed a news conference on Monday at the NDC’s campaign office at Kuku Hill, Osu. Read the full statement published below.
Nana Akufo-Addo is a Desperate Politician!!!
Ladies and gentlemen of the press, we are grateful to you for your presence here this morning at the Kuku Hill Campaign Office of the NDC.
Thanks to our revered party elder, Uncle Harry Sawyer, this place has been home to the NDC for years, and continues to be a major pivot around which our 2012 campaign is revolving.
We have invited you here this morning to make it public that the spirit of our late Leader and President, His Excellency Professor John Evans Atta Mills is alive in this place and very much a part of the campaign to win the December 7th election, and also to expose the real motive behind Akufo-Addo’s visit to Mr. Jerry John Rawlings last week and his web of corruption.
The NPP Flagbearer and his media apparatchiks would have the world believe that the visit to Mr. Jerry John Rawlings, was done in the supreme interest of the nation.
Akufo-Addo has been walking around with a very heavy negative public image and so is trying desperately to hoodwink Ghanaians into believing that he is recreating his image.
It is pretty obvious that Akufo-Addo and his handlers do not respect the intelligence of Ghanaians, and think that the voting public would be swayed by that charade-of-a-visit.
Ladies and gentlemen of the media, the Fact Forum is stating emphatically that Akufo-Addo visited Mr. Rawlings for the sole purpose of pursuing his inordinate desire to become President AT ALL COST.
Nana Akufo-Addo’s visit to Mr. Rawlings amply exposes the NPP flagbearer as a very desperate politician who is realising that his chances of becoming President “at all cost” are becoming slimmer by the day, and so is desperately clutching onto every straw that he can lay his hands on.
Akufo-Addo has not hidden his desire to become President of Kwame Nkrumah’s Ghana AT ALL COST, and the visit to Mr. Rawlings only goes to expose him as a desperado.
It is a matter of fact that Akufo-Addo and his handlers have convinced themselves that Mr. Rawlings has the capacity to destroy the NDC hence the decision to play ball with him.
We repeat; Akufo-Addo and his handlers have convinced themselves that Mr. Rawlings has the capacity to destroy the NDC hence the decision of the NPP Flagbearer to now be comically seeking the blessings of the person who until recently, was supposed to be the most evil person in Ghana.
The NPP has signed a pact with the National Democratic Party (NDP) to work to destroy the NDC and so Akufo-Addo is now swallowing his pride, and kowtowing to the man he used to ridicule and vilify. We ask; would it ever be possible for God to kowtow to the devil? We leave you to answer that question.
If Akufo-Addo was really sincere with his visit, he should have seized the opportunity to apologise to Mr. Rawlings for stripping him off his diplomatic courtesies when the latter was Foreign Minister.
Also, if Akufo-Addo was sincere with his visit, he should have siezed the opportunity to apologise to the nation for his ALL DIE BE DIE war cry.
Akufo-Addo did none of the above; and he thinks that we cannot decipher and figure out the real reason for which he visited Mr. Rawlings?
If Akufo-Addo does not respect the intelligence of his party members, he should at least not disrespect the intelligence of the majority of Ghanaians.
{sidebar id=10 align=right}Ladies and Gentlemen of the press, for failing to speak to the solid issues that would have panned him out as wanting to really move the political bar notches higher, Akufo-Addo has rather further blighted his chance of becoming President because discerning Ghanaians are incensed with his attempt to insult their intelligence.
Is it not interesting that in 2008, Akufo-Addo and the NPP kept telling Ghanaians that a vote for Professor AttaMills, would be a vote for Rawlings, for which television adverts were put out?
Did Akufo-Addo and co not spend copious time using the “fear factor” to attempt to alarm Ghanaians that a vote for Professor Atta Mills would allow Rawlings to take back political power and terrorise Ghanaians?
So if today Akufo-Addo is seeking the blessing of Rawlings, would Ghanaians be wrong in concluding that a vote for Akufo-Addo would be a vote for Rawlings?
When did Mr. Rawlings become the god that Akufo-Addo and the NPP are now worshiping?
And they think that majority of Ghanaians are not seeing through the agenda of Akufo-Addo and the NPP?
Indeed, the Facts Forum has interacted with a number of NPP supporters who are very livid at the way Akufo-Addo is suddenly kowtowing to Mr. Rawlings and singing his praise.
Ladies and gentlemen of the press, the Facts Forum is convinced that because Akufo-Addo has realised that his “lie-lie” free SHS policy is not convincing the electorate, he is now desperately focusing his attention on supporting the NDP to destroy the NDC. But that is wishful thinking!!!
Akufo-Addo has come to realise that his watery promises would not make him President and so is hanging his last hope on the destruction of the NDC.
We are stating without any equivocation that the NDC is not about to die.
Just as His Excellency President Atta Mills declared that Ghana will not die; the Facts Forum is also declaring that by the grace of God, the NDC will not die!
No single individual has the capacity to destroy the NDC and so if Akufo-Addo is waiting for the NDC to die before he becomes President of Kwame Nkrumah’s Ghana, then he will wait till the second coming of Christ.
His Excellency President John Evans Atta Mills started to build a Better Ghana and in the past three and a half years, it is crystal clear that the Better Ghana agenda is sturdily on course, and the Fact Forum is confident that with the realistic and achievable pledges that His Excellency President John Mahama is making to advance the Better Ghana agenda, majority of discerning Ghanaians will give the NDC the mandate in December to work in the interest of entire nation.
As part of his desperation, he recently went to Isreal to touch the ‘wailing wall’ to deceive Ghanaians into believing that he has changed, yet has refused to show remorse on his tribal inflammatory comments and ridiculing Prof. MILLS and Christianity for fasting and praying at the Castle. Since when has AKUFFO ADDO realize that God reigns in the affairs of men?
Nana Akufo-Addo’s plan to paint a saintly picture of himself has failed woefully and we wish him better luck in his next desperate move to deceive the electorate into voting for him.
The Facts Forum also believes that, it is in this desperation that he now claims to be incorruptible. Laughable as it is, we will find an appropriate time to deal with it.
Indeed the Facts Forum believes that voting Akufo Addo into government in 2013 will be the biggest endorsement and celebration of corruption in Ghana. Akufo Addo and the NPP carry not only the disgraceful title of being the most corrupt government in the history of Ghana but sadly Ghana’s history is replete with how the NPP institutionalized and decentralized corruption in Ghana.
Ladies and gentlemen of the press, we thank you for your presence here and also thank you for your kind attention.
Signed
Peter Boamah Otokunor

Martin Amidu strips Mahama; exposes more rot in NDC
Former Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Martin A.B.K Amidu has issued yet another statement challenging the effectiveness of President Mahama' approach to fighting corruption.
{sidebar id=11 align=right}The statement, published on his website, further exposed some practices in the NDC government which he, believes were laden with abuse of office, corruption amongst others.
Read below the full statement from Martin ABK Amidu.
I heard the transitional President, John Dramani Mahama, throwing a challenge at Ho to anybody who has evidence that he is corrupt to report him to any of the institutions set up for the purpose to investigate him. Myjoyonline.com on the same day 4 October 2012 also quoted him as saying that: “I am prepared as the President of this country to appear before anybody, any institution to be investigated for corruption.” Which Ghanaian in his right senses will report a sitting President for such an investigation in the hope of getting impartial results?
The middle class in Ghana are educated men and women who are supposed to be discerning, rational, and objective due to their socialization and training. Is the Ghanaian middle class being told that in spite of our education and experience we should believe that any impartial investigation by any of the public anti-corruption agencies as presently constituted can take place about his personal incorruptibility or that of the Government he leads? Or does he think a middle class worth the name of an educated middle class will accept the hollow challenge thrown at Ho without reasoning? Speaking for myself, I am a citizen who cherishes my right as a citizen and cannot allow this hollow challenge thrown by the transitional President to pass without exercising my birth right as a citizen to tell him not to talk down on Ghanaians as though we were all fools.
{sidebar id=10 align=right}My respectful view is that President Mahama should set up a bi-partisan committee of Parliament to take evidence from Ghanaians on the matter of corruption in his Government. As Minister for the Interior and later as Attorney-General I continually took up the matter of corruption in Government with the late President Mills and the Chief of Staff, John H. M. Newman.
Indeed it was in 2010 that I told the late President and the Chief of Staff that if the late President could advise his appointees to reduce corruption, abuse of office and arrogance for the remaining two years the NDC would win the 2012 elections hands down. I kept going back to this topic with the late President and the Chief of Staff until 13th January 2012 when I fell out with the late President on the Woyome and other Gargantuan issues of corruption, abuse of office and the flagrant rape of the public purse by Ministers and their NDC collaborators in this Government.
I had the privilege of speaking very plainly to the late President because of our personal friendship of several years with him which he knew was the only reason I agreed to his pressures to come into his Government as his Presidential Advisor on Legal Affairs in the first place. I remained bold in pushing him to clean the rot in the NDC because the understanding between him and myself on 21st July 2009 after I had refused to be Ambassador to Italy was to join him as Presidential Advisor on Legal Affairs to help him clean the dirt and not to hide it.
I discharged that duty and exposed corrupt practices and abuse of office including the gargantuan collusive and collaborative judgment debts. For evidence just read only my letter D45/SF. 173/10 dated 6th January 2012 entitled: “Why the Government of Ghana must be unequivocally resolute to set aside the collaborative or collusive default judgment entered in favour of Alfred Agbesi Woyome….”, addressed to the Secretary to the President, and the Chief of Staff and copied to the National Security Coordinator. I kept my side of the bargain with the late President Mills even when I knew it was leading to the termination of my appointment.
Someone publicized my comments in the book of condolences to the late President Mills in which I stated that: “You know I fought the system and not your person” and others took it for a joke. I meant what I wrote. Each time I reported Ministers or top NDC party Executives to the President for coming to ask me to authorize unconstitutional payments or inflate judgment debts he always said: “that is why I put you there”.
Unfortunately as was his problem, he found it difficult to call the persons involved to admonish them. But it would be wrong to pretend that the corruption, abuse of office for personal gains or the arrogance of some political appointees died with the demise of Professor Mills. I wish to repeat that Professor Mills as person was not the problem. It was the system of corruption and graft over which he presided which was the problem. And indeed he tried in various ways when he was left alone to fight the endemic corruption in his Government.
It would be recalled that in July 2011 there was a hue and cry about the prices for the acquisition of five (5) aircrafts for the Ghana Armed Forces. Even though on 26th July 2011 the late Prof. Mills attempted to defend the purchase of the five aircrafts, he became convinced of the necessity to set up a committee to investigate those purchases. A Committee to Investigate the Processes of the Acquisition of Five Aircrafts (5) including Embraer 190 Aircraft and hanger for the Ghana Armed Forces consisting of Mr. William Aboah, Mr. George Amoah, and Brig. Gen. Allotey (Rtd) former Judge Advocate-General was put together.
The terms of reference of the Committee as I was instructed and drafted them for the late President were: “(i) to investigate the processes adopted in selecting, negotiating, and agreeing on the acquisition of the aircrafts; (ii) to investigate the competitive advantage, prices of the aircrafts and the level of economic and financial due diligence conducted by relevant agencies in the process of acquisition of the aircrafts; and (iii) to investigate any other matter that in the opinion of the Committee is reasonably related to the foregoing terms of reference.” Pressure groups never allowed the Committee to take off. But the very fact that the late President Mills even contemplated this committee meant that he was uncomfortable with and suspicious of the alleged inflated prices of the aircrafts.
On the same 26th July 2011 the Vice President, Chief of Staff, the Secretary to the Cabinet, the Communications Director to the President, the Deputy Minister for Information and myself met the late President in his office after I had raised objection to the issuance of an executive consent to off load the E. O. Group shares of over US$300 million to Tullow while a criminal prosecution was pending against the accused persons.
Behind my back a memorandum was sent to the late President that created the impression that I had agreed to the issuance of an Executive Consent to enable the Minister of Energy to transfer the shares and for me to issue an indemnity in favour of Tullow stating amongst others that no prosecution was pending and none would be undertaken in the future. I wrote refusing to issue the indemnity and indicated my disagreement with the deception of the late President.
The meeting was, therefore, called to strategize how the Government side was to handle the fallout from the share transfer while criminal charges were pending against E. O. Group. I stuck to my ground and refused to issue the indemnity. I still am at a loss to know what the consideration for helping the E. O. Group out of the criminal prosecution is. Only an impartial investigation will show!
As a result of the meeting with the late President I wrote him letter No. XE337/09/8 dated 27th July 11 in which I indicated that I was not going to cover up the unconstitutional conduct of deceiving the President to grant an executive consent with a sham prosecution. In that letter, which is not classified, I stated that: “…There are many matters of probity and propriety which I have dutifully brought to your notice and knowledge as your Attorney-General which I cannot repeat in a written letter.
Suffice it to say that it is objectionable to me for fellow lawyers to hide and maneuver behind the shadows while I am in line and public position to take the bullets and responsibilities of public office.” I made it clear in this letter that the only way an indemnity could be issued in the E. O. Group consent saga was to appoint another Attorney-General who would do so.
I give only the foregoing two examples to show that corruption or the perception of corruption in this Government is endemic and systemic and was not personal to my late friend Professor Atta Mills. The people infecting this Government with the endemic corruption and abuse of office for private gains are alive and in President Mahama’s Government.
In spite of the fact that I left office fighting Gargantuan corruption and abuse of the judgment debt process in this very Government, I will be answering to the “a fool will be a fool whether he goes to school or not” adage to report President Mahama or his Government to any of the public anti-corruption agencies appointed by the same Government.
President Mahama should demonstrate to the electorate the seriousness of his challenge and adherence to his oath of office as President by setting up a bi-partisan committee of Parliament to investigate corruption in his Government. He would be amazed at the Gargantuan volume of evidence that will be volunteered to the bi-partisan Committee. As sitting a President, it will be folly on the part of any reasonable person to report him to any public investigation body on charges of corruption so he may defend himself.

Rawlings meets Akufo-Addo - charges him to fight corruption
Founder of the ruling National Democratic Congress, former President Rawlings, yesterday charged Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, Presidential Candidate of the New Patriotic Party, to take the necessary steps to fight the cancer of corruption which has engulfed the current administration in the event of becoming the next president after the upcoming December polls.
Mr Rawlings, who appeared certain of an Akufo-Addo victory in the December polls, expressed deep regrets about the fact that corruption was eating too deep into the fabric of the country, with the resources of the nation not being used for the benefit of the people.
{sidebar id=10 align=right}He therefore charged Nana Akufo-Addo to ensure judicious use of the nation’s resources to meet the basic needs of the people and ensure the promotion of their welfare under his presidency.
Yesterday was indeed a moment of history making at the Ridge residence of the former president when he held open discussions with Nana Akufo-Addo on a variety of issues, all geared towards national development.
Nana Akufo-Addo, in the company of Jake Obetsebi-Lamptey, NPP National Chairman, Fred Oware, NPP 1st National Vice Chairman, was at the former president’s office on a courtesy call.
The two agreed on the need for collaborative efforts to safeguard the nation’s peace and stability, by particularly ensuring that the upcoming December presidential and parliamentary elections take place in an atmosphere of peace.
Former President Rawlings noted that the historic meeting between him and Nana Akufo-Addo would send out a strong signal to supporters of both the NPP and the NDC that the nation’s democracy had come of age, and so there was the need for high level of tolerance, co-operation and unity in the pursuit of the national interest.
He also stressed the need for all to remain vigilant at the polls, and ensure that the nation goes through free and fair elections on December 7.
Top among the concerns of Mr Rawlings were how the NPP Presidential Candidate will fight the cancer of corruption, tackle the basic needs of the people by ensuring judicious of the nation’s resources and ensure the safety of members of the ruling NDC under his presidency.
Mr Rawlings, who disclosed he would take active part in this year’s electioneering campaign, appealed to Nana Akufo-Addo to ensure the safety of members of the NDC under his presidency.
He noted that it was the fear of going into opposition, and the uncertainty of what awaits them, that had given rise to the nervousness of the ruling party in its outlook.
The NDC founder demanded an assurance from Nana Akufo-Addo and the NPP that when they return to the corridors of power after the December polls, they would ensure members of his party enjoy some peace and justice.
Nana Akufo-Addo assured Mr Rawlings and members of the NDC that they would have nothing to fear under his presidency, stressing that he would always ensure the people of Ghana, irrespective of their backgrounds, feel secure at all times, with their personal lives not being in danger.
The NPP leader said he did not see any reason why a change of power from one political party to another should pose a threat to any group of people, adding that he would be committed to all aspects of the welfare of the people.
“Come what may after the December elections, we should all collaborate to ensure the nation’s peace and stability. There is nothing for anyone to be afraid of under my presidency. I will ensure good governance that will secure the collective interest of the nation,” Nana Akufo-Addo assured.
The NPP Presidential Candidate added that there was better future ahead of the nation, where there would be more constructive engagement for Ghana to continue to show the way in good governance on the African continent.

‘Presidents’ Pay ¢100M
PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATES in the 2012 general elections are expected to pay GH¢10,000 or GH¢100 million as the nomination fee for the December 7 polls.
However, the nomination fee for parliamentary elections was GH¢1,000.
The Electoral Commission (EC) released the amounts in a statement signed and issued on Thursday by its Deputy Chairman in charge of operations, Kwadwo Sarfo Kantanka.
{sidebar id=10 align=right}The statement said in accordance with regulations 4 and 5 of the Public Elections Regulations, 2012, the EC would receive nominations for the 2012 elections on October 17 and 18.
It said political parties desirous of sponsoring candidates for the parliamentary elections as well as individuals who were interested in contesting the said elections may obtain nomination forms from the Returning Officers in the respective constituencies or the regional offices of the commission.
Nomination forms for the presidential election, the statement added, may be obtained from the head office of the commission.
It reminded candidates to submit four copies of their recent photographs (bust) with red background showing the full face and both ears when submitting their nomination forms.
“Political Parties and individuals who want to contest the elections are advised to take note and act accordingly,” the statement concluded.
Political pundits have been wondering when the EC would open nominations for this year’s presidential and parliamentary elections, especially when the usual filing month of September has passed without a word from the election governing body.
